They say that Amateur Radio is a life time hobby, and I beleive it. There is
so much that you can do in Amateur Radio, that it will take a life time to do it
all.
Amateur Radio Operators are licienced by the FCC( Federal
Communications Commission), but anybody can become an Amateur Radio Operator.
Before April 15, 2000 there were 6 Classes in the USA
- Novice with 5 WPM
- Technician with No Code
- Technician with 5 WPM
- General with 13 WPM
- Advanced with 13 WPM
- Amateur Extra with 20 WPM
The only class that does not require Morse Code is the Technician
NO CODE, but you get to use more frequencies if you do pass the Morse Code
Test(as I have). It is well worth your time and effort to pass the morse
code.
As of April 15, 2000, there is only one Morse Code speed of 5 WPM(Words Per Minute).
Passing the Morse Code will allow you to use portions of the HF bands on 160, 80, 40, 30,20, 17,
15, 12, 10 Meters. What you can actually use is based on the license class. See the chart below.
- Technician with No Code - Element 2 35-questions
- Technician with Code - Element 1 5 WPM, Element 2 35-questions
- General - Element 3 35 questions Plus Elements 1 and 2
- Amateur Extra - Element 4 50 questions Plus Elements 1,2 and 3
The Novice and Advanced classes will still exist, but no one will
be allowed to enter these classes. But people in these classes can graduate
to other classes. Radio Shack sales a book for $10 that goes into more detail.
I am a member of the Birmingham Amateur Radio Club
Members of this club come mainly from Jefferson and Shelby Counties. Shelby count also has its own
club called the .
The Skywarn group in the Jefferson/Shelby County Alabama Area is trying to get a
Communications Vehicle.
I Also participate in foxhunts when I can. In case you don't know what a foxhunt is goto the
Albuquerque Transmitter Hunters HomePage.
The American Radio Relay League
is the primary interface between the amateur radio operator and the FCC. The ARRL is not a
governmental body, but a group of amateur radio operators that have gathered so that their
interests in amateur radio can be presented to the government.
