1961 Ford Galaxy
390 V8 - 401 HP

Some of these pictures are not of my original cars, they are however, the same model and color of my cars. This is a representative picture of the 61 Ford Galaxie that I bought on my 21st birthday in 1966. This picture is a Starliner model roof line. Mine was the two door hardtop with the square roof (known by Ford collectors as a "boxtop" ). The engine was a 401 HP 390 cube, coded Z. That engine option came from the factory with a four-barrel carburetor, plus a set of three deuces and an aluminum intake manifold in the trunk, to be installed by the dealer. What was unique about my car was it had a three speed column shift with that big engine option.

The triple set of Holley two barrels was a first for a production Ford. The 401 horse 390's came with special equipment. First, all came stock with the 3-speed manual transmission. Automatic was not available with this performance big block because Ford didn't think that their Cruise-O-Matic was up to the rpm and torque capabilities of the hi-power 390. As was possible in 1960, however, a Borg-Warner four-speed manual was offered through the dealer, in which case Ford supplied a blank tube running up to the top of the column in place of the column linkage.

Power steering & power brakes were not available with this solid lifter engine package, making it great for arm and leg muscle workouts . All 401 horse 390's came standard with a heavy duty suspension of stiffer springs and shocks, front and rear. Drum brakes were 3" wide, instead of the standard 2.5", featuring fade resistant linings. Steel wheels were upgraded from 14" to 15", mounting nylon cord tires sized either 6.70 x 15, or the optional 7.10 x 15. Even the drive line was beefed up, measuring 3" in diameter instead of 2.75". A four-pinion differential replaced the regular two-pinion unit, fitted with heavy duty U-joints. The fuel line was also 3/8" in diameter, upgraded from 5/16".

The car was a real sleeper, with the three speed column shift it looked like the family sedan. Only the 390 Thunderbird emblems on the fenders hinted at what was hiding under the hood. The last time I saw the car was in 1967, it was still sitting on the dealers lot a few months after I traded it on a beautiful 1965 Ford Galaxie 500XL. The right front fender and hood had suffered damage when the overhead dealers sign fell on it during a storm.

According to Ford Motor Company sources only a limited number of cars were ordered with the stock 3 speed column shift and the 401 horsepower 390 cubic inch engine option. Most buyers opted for the 4 speed on the floor dealer installed option, making the 390cid 401 HP 3 speed a very collectable car today. I sure wish mine was still in my garage.
