I was born in Boston, Massachusetts, "way back" in 1949. My paternal grandparents originally came from
Newfoundland. My grandfather, Captain John Hanrahan, was a master mariner and supposedly was captain of the first tugboat going through the Cape Cod Canal back in the thirties. Unfortunately, I never knew him as he passed away about a year or so before I was born. My maternal grandparents were from southeastern Massachusetts. My maternal grandfather, Bill Bowser, owned a dental laboratory in Boston and my Dad, Bernie Hanrahan, worked for him for several years after World War II and when I was a small child. I have much better memories of my grandmothers...my maternal grandmother, Molly (Mary Ann) Bowser, passed away from TB at the young age of 52 when I was about 5 or 6. I can still remember how kind she was. My paternal grandmother, Mary Hanrahan, lived until 90 and passed away when I was 19 and in college. I'm very thankful that I was able to know her growing up. Although she grew up in Newfoundland, I can still remember "Nana's" Irish brogue.

I am very grateful to my parents, Bernie and Gige Hanrahan, who brought me up with a very strong sense of family. My mother still lives in Mashpee on Cape Cod. My Dad passed away in May 2003 and was a decorated World War II Marine Corps veteran of Guadalcanal and other campaigns in the South Pacific and retired from the uniformed division of the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (now the Massachusetts State Police). (As a matter of fact, my Dad issued me my first driver's license at the age of 16, after a grueling two hour examination on the road!) My mother, Gertrude ("Gige" to all) was always there to help her six children grow (I'm the oldest of six) in addition to multiple careers as an office administrator and surgical scrub nurse.

I grew up in the southeastern Massachusetts town of Stoughton, about 20 miles southwest of Boston. After graduating from Stoughton High School in 1967, I attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, where I graduated with a degree in Anthropology in 1971.  Over the years, my professional career has focused on commercial real estate finance (as  a vice president of the respective commercial real estate divisions of Bank of Boston, Fleet Bank) as well as extensive experience in site acquisition and development in the telecommunications industry.  In the early 1980's I was a senior appraiser with the Bank of Boston (having appraised over $3 billion in mixed use commercial real estate projects throughout the United States) as well as a right-of-way agent/appraiser with the West Virginia Department of Highways.  Additionally, I'm a licensed real estate broker. On the personal side, I've been married to Jane for 20 great years, and am the proud Dad of three grown kids and two grandkids. Erik, my oldest, is a commercial charter pilot and flight instructor in Arizona, Air Force veteran and graduate of Arizona State University. Megan is an educator and child caretaker in Massachusetts and a graduate of St. Leo University in Florida. My youngest, Christine, is a business executive and a graduate of Webster University, as is her mother, Jane, a court administrator in Polk County, Florida. My granddaughter Alexi, 10, lives with her mom Christine in Massachusetts, and attends the fourth grade. My grandson, Brandon, 5, lives in Arizona, and unfortunately I don't get a chance to see him as often as I would like. Brandon has a few more adventures than most five year olds, as he gets to fly sometimes with his Dad, Erik. I am also fortunate to have a great daughter-in-law, Laura, in Arizona, and son-in-law, Wayne (a fellow graduate of the University of Massachusetts - (Go Minutemen!) in Massachusetts. Last, but not least, I want to make special mention of my aunt, J. Elizabeth Conrad. Elizabeth is only eight years older than I and was the older sister I never had. In addition to teaching me to read (at the age of five or so, that is), she has always been there for me. Thanks, Jude!

My hobbies and interests are varied. I have a life long interest in amateur radio which culminated in an Amateur Extra class license, W1WH. Former callsigns held are KA8EUE, KA1KF and W1VFR. My other primary interest is aviation, particularly general aviation flying. I'm a volunteer pilot for Angel Flight, an organization of volunteer pilots which provides free emergency medical transportation for those in need. I'm also a member of AOPA (the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association), and recommend that you check out their site if you're interested in getting started in aviation.  I'm also into GPS (Global Positioning System) uses and technology, which I've used extensively while piloting and in the course of developing wireless telecommunications sites as well as multipointing (an unusual hobby involving the researching exploring of various locations where multiple boundaries intersect.  I'm the creator of a boundary and multipointing-related group list called BoundaryPoint).

Jane and I are also members of Mensa.  Other interests include off-roading in my Jeep, reading and listening to classic music as well as Jimmy Buffett.
