Portable and Mobile
Operations – The Early Days
A small selection of photos of my early efforts at taking VHF/UHF radio gear away from home, to operate from remote locations or while mobile.
In the beginning… Five-element 144MHz NBS Yagi and ten-element
432MHz NBS Yagi, and RG-58 coax cable…
Mt Tarrengower, VIC; 15th March 1997.
And then came the DL6WU-design Yagi… 10 elements at 144MHz, and 15 elements at 432MHz – much
better! Mt Tassie, VIC; 28th
September 1997.
Trying to behave as innocuously as
possible... Whiskey Bay car park,
Wilson’s Promontory, VIC, NSW, 10th January 1998

with 48-element DL6WU-design Yagi at 1296MHz added to the arsenal. Mt Little Baldy (near Mt Hotham), VIC; 9th

in the Spring VHF/UHF Field Day contest whilst returning to Melbourne from
Sydney after a 9-month stint working at the Sydney Olympic Games. Parked on high ground just outside Junee,

It ain’t all work and no play. Most of my trips are solo efforts, but my
friend Dave (on the left) joined me for this one (I was falling apart, boom
boom). Taking a break during setting up
on the ridge overlooking the ghost town of Waukaringa, SA; 20th
April 2002
Reflecting on how much damage my Honda Civic
would have suffered climbing the ridge at Waukaringa,
