~~ Year in Review - 2009 ~~

As we begin another new year, I'll be archiving descriptions of our various events in this section of the web site for posterity.  Enjoy!

JANUARY:

January 22nd meeting highlights:

WA3UMY demonstrated the new Ten-Tec Omni VII

This radio can be operated from anywhere in the world through the Internet.  No computer is required - it plugs directly
into a wideband Internet access (router) using its built-in Ethernet port.  A free software application is then hosted on the remote
computer (also on a wideband Internet connection) to control EVERY single function of this radio to deliver live receive AND transmit
operation from anywhere else in the world.  Now how cool is that!

DATE: 10 October, 2009 ----- Tower Installation at Museum

Folks, I'd like to take a few moments to publicly thank everyone who gave up several hours of their free time this past Saturday morning to come to the Naval Air Museum and help with the installation of the new Rohn 25G tower. We were able to erect 30 feet of tower, including digging the hole, putting in gravel, and pouring the concrete around the tower base. We also installed the tower support bracket to attach the tower to the building at the 20 foot level.

In two weeks, on Saturday morning (10 October) at 10 AM, we are planning to install the top two sections, install the rotator, and run the antenna and rotor control cables to the console. We will be installing a tri-band yagi antenna a little later once we get it all cleaned up. This has been one of our bigger projects this year but one that will pay significant benefits to the membership by having a much more capable antenna system for the club station at the museum.

Again, thank you for all your help!

Mark your calendars for Saturday, 10 October at 10 AM to meet at the rear of the Naval Air Museum to complete the tower. We will need both tower climbers and ground assistants to:

(1) install the rotator into the top section,
(2) stack the top two sections,
(3) run the antenna coax cables (two) and rotor control cable from the tower to the operating console,
(4) seal up the cable entry point into the building, and
(5) backfill the tower base and install the anti-climb device.

This next effort should only take about two or three hours maximum to accomplish. Any assistance from the club membership will be greatly appreciated. Free lunch at the Bon Buffet restaurant will be offered to all working party participants at the conclusion of the event.

Vr, Pete (WA3UMY)

President, SMCARA
