At home, I'm interested in QRP CW operation, and in data modes - specifically, PSK and MFSK, but also enjoy QSOs in Hellschreiber and other arcane modes.
SOTA encourages /P operation from peaks across the UK and an increasing number of other countries. The programme is detailed at http://www.sota.org.uk - in addition, there is a Yahoo group dedicated to SOTA activity, in which postings of activations are to be found. This is at http://groups.yahoo.com/summits/

One of the great things about SOTA is that you can start on next to no kit. You need basic walking skills and equipment - a good pair of walking boots, waterproofs, and an ability to read maps. Over and above that, an amateur radio transmitting licence - the foundation licence is quite adequate, and a small lightweight TX of some sort. I use a Yaesu VX-7R for winter activations, mainly because it's waterproof.
