Was RM3 in '63 and in the first (plankowner) crew to man NM. Navy sent bunch of us to Morrocco first for 4 months (Port Layautye/Sidi Iea) than to NM. Loved Greece. The old king died about a month after I arrived and the Prince assumed the throne and later married the Swedish(?) Princess. I was going to Plake the day the marriage happened and walked right by the church and saw the coach and horses with the newly married inside, just a glimps tho. Was in bar off Constution Square listening to SW and heard of Kennedy shot and hi-tailed it back to base. Was there for student riots ( October 11 gang born then?) at University, tear gas not much fun. Small but nice beaches at Volugmeni(sp) and FIX a great tasting beer. The Delphi wine fest a lot of fun also. Plaka was my hangout most of the time while on 72-hour break. A lot of booze, via the class XI liqure store downtown (gotta love the military for booze). Remember Sackie's, The Kookavia and Fengarie's (Moon & Stars as in the pop song of the time}. The ex-prime minister Popendraious(sp) was just a rabble-rouser then, drawing 10,000 crowd for speeches in Omonia Square. You ain't lived until you hear 10,000 screaming Greeks! Excuse my spelling please as I'm 63 years old now and been a long time out of school. Yahsoo felimoo's.

Hi- I was stationed with a SeaBee detachment (NMCB 133) at NGR in 1985 for seven months- great memories, some of the best of my youth. I went back to Greece during the summer of 2005 for three weeks and returned to the decommissioned base for a visit. Very sad, as the base has been left to the elements and is very run-down. Much of the base is being used as the local landfill for construction debris. For those of us who were there and loved everything about the Navy and life in Greece, seeing what has come of it is heartbreaking. Nea Makri has changed considerably as well- much more developed. We also took a drive to the T-site, which has been transformed and was the site of the 2004 Olympic rowing games.

Good old NGR. There from 70-73. Spent all my time trying to tie knots in patch cords and changing mods/demods in tech control and trying to get "skitch" to get up out of his chair! Nea Makri was best time of my career...

Was at NGR 1970/72, worked Msg Ctr, Tech. Control, Flt Ctr. Tks to Bob Chruchwell I found this site. Him and Rhonda, me and Chris talk about the days we were there, "WE WERE IN THE GARDEN OF EDEN" and didn't know it. Some of the guys that I remember, Jim Zaraks (john hancock ins.), Charlie Hamilton, Pappy Freeman (CB), Bob Womble, Wally Tisch wife Toki, Denny Kramer, Paul Schuman, Van & Sarge at the bowling alley, Andy at the Club Zeus, I COULD GO ON, ON, ON, ON, ON, ON I think I made my point. THANK GOD FOR NGR BEING PART OF MY LIFE!

Somehow, Darryl found one of my pictures from the ham shack on webshots and left me a comment which brought me here - great to see. So many fond memories of the place. I've been back to Greece twice since then but never made it back to the old site area. Thanks for having this and I will check it out in more detail.

I was stationed in greece from Jan 68 thru Jan 69. Loved every minute of it. Still keep intouch with some of the guys that I meet, and would like to see rock hudson and frank russo again. Going to Greece and NGR was the very first time I had ever been overseas and the many friends that I made during the two year stint were the friends that last a lifetime...My son, then 2 years old, and I learned to be a family there. We enjoyed traveling about the country. We also enjoyed the trips to the islands and into Athens. I still have the rugs and blankets and the sword that I bought there in the 70's. My time in Greece was from June 77 to December 79. To my old friends, thanks for remaining my friends.... To my new friends, waiting to be met, thanks for becoming my friend. Just found this site! NGR was a good time. Was a CW/SS op, also msg cen and traffic checker, May 68 to Apr 70. Saw posts from Blackie Blackburn and Robbie, had to butt in. Remember all the traffic from NSSU, NGCC, NJVR, etc., and always fighting AOK for CW traffic. Best times were in downtown Nea Makri and riding motor bikes along the beach. Howie Holden RM2

Was never stationed at NGR, but visited there in summer of '66 with group of comm guys from 6th Fleet. As I remember we came over and got a tour of the place and then had a cook-out. Was ETN2 aboard USS Waccamaw (AO-109) at the time. I remember that you guys really put out the welcome mat. Was a radio ham then and still am, call now N4UJ. When cw was used aboard NHNF, which we had to do a few times on that Med cruise, I was usually the one to do it even though I was not an RM! Nice to find your web site.

Wow! Stumbled across this by accident...and am glad I did. The best memories of my life were when I was in Nea Makri. (Big smile on the face). Did the Message Center until learning morse code and spent the rest of my days in CW working with James (Jimmy) Harp. He was the only one I knew that got awarded his speed key there. Anyone else? Great site...thanks.

Great home page. You must have been a CW operator and tape ape! I did a little of both. Hopefully, when the word gets around, you will be able to expand it. Unfortunately, all of my pictures from Nea Makri days have been lost. I was in Nea Makri from early 1974 to December 1976 (RM1(2319)). I was a watch stander for about 6 months before moving into the tech control office. I lived a block off the square, in George's apartments (across the street from the bakery). Some of my more memorable times were: - pick-up basketball games at lunch time after our daily run; - bicycle rides up through the village of Marathon and on around Marathon Lake, down to the Greek Army Base, and then back across the mountain to Nea Makri. - Running the Marathon from the village of Marathon to Athens. Unlike the first Marathon runner in 490BC, who ran to Athens after the battle on the plain of Marathon with the news "we won" and immediately died. I lived on to suffer aching muscles; - A study tour of the Minoan Civilization on Crete; - Ski school in Garmisch, Germany; and - Late nigh souvlakis at Pops (priceless) and dinner at one of the many tavernas (my favorite was in Rafina on right side of the road going toward Athens. I don't remember the name) The list could go forever. As I said at first GREAT JOB!

I was aboard '64-'66.... anyone remember: Fran Bailey, Jack Fulton, Eddie Underwood, Russ Craighead, Bill Biard, Terry Ward, Rick Gagne,and/or Manuel Sanchez. We were not Communicators.. we were the base-pukes; security, generators, construction, etc. We didn't work in air-conditioned trailors. We worked in the swamps & fields......digging trenches for communications' cable. We took the clothing & boots the Sea-Bees left & wore them when our dungarees wore out. We were the guys, when it froze outside, who weren't allowed into the Com Trailers to thaw out but had to walk the fence line for security. Anyone remember us?
