Amateur radio is embarking on a new
frontier. We will either embrace the new technology or lose
the opportunities that lie before us.
Bobbie Johnson KD4LV

New technologies have always been a source of
controversy and entanglement. The infamous Luddites of the
18th century are a prime example of what fear of the unknown can
accomplish. Criticism and defamation of new ideas will
crush the amateur community as we know it.
New technologies can be dangerous if
unchecked, but ideas such as spread-spectrum, encription, moving
to higher frequencies, raising the entry license requirments, and
integrating computerized technology into our amateur radio
service is a requirement, not an option.
Our rights to the frequencies we share
are a priviledge, not a given. Congress has established the FCC
to allocate frequencies to the amateur radio service to be used
primarily as a service to the public, not as a hobby for an elite
few. When other forms of communication replace our ability
to provide the service as required by the FCC, then the
multi-billion dollar frequency allocations we enjoy will be sold
at public auction, and we will become no more than the holders of
worthless paper that we now pride as our station/operators
license.
Amsat's Phase 3D is an excellent peice
of state of art technology. Like it or not, this satellite will
make or break the amateur community. If this mission succeeds,
then a new world of operating techniques and modes will develop.
If it fails, major catastrophe will ensue. We simply have
not been able to keep up with the commercial sector in any other
area of communication.
I encourage you to visit some of the
sites listed on the following pages. Learn as much as you
can, as quickly as you can, in any manner you can, before we lose
to a hoard of spectrum hungry commercial interest.
If you have newsgroup capability, I
encourage you to visit the amateur radio groups and see first
hand the flux of invaders trying to force realocation of our
frequency spectrum. One being Little Leo.
I hope you enjoy this page, but most of
all, enjoy amateur radio.
