So you ask what I would like or what I do.....
- Wilderness SAR Team - Yes, I do have a few. As I
told you before, I am presently the Coordinator of the Wilderness Search and
Rescue Team. I joined the team about 10 years ago. When I joined the team,
it was very small and I think we had a total of about 2 team owned radios
and maybe 1 or 2 personally owned. I guess one of my priorities with
Wilderness was to improve their communications. To effectively operate a
search function, I had to be able to communicate with all of the people in
and around a wooded area. Soon after I joined the team, I received my
Amateur Radio license. Not much after that, I was promoted to Communications
Officer, which I held until the responsibilities of Team Coordinator forced
me to appoint a new CO.
I am very proud of the Wilderness Search and Rescue Team. I believe they
have come along way in the last 10 years, and hope the next 5 will be even
better.
Ham Radio has played a very important role in certain SAR missions I have
been involved in, including multiple standby and training events.
West Monroe Volunteer Fire Department -
A few years ago I was urged to join the fire department. I have been to numerous
class's since joining and am still in new class's every day to learn more
about the fire service. This new interest has been there since my father was
a fireman in Cleveland. I grew up going down to the station with my dad and
meeting all the firemen. A lot has changed since then, but there are still
the good things that go along with being part of an organization. My only
complaints about the fire service is the lack of communications due to the
multi million dollar system in our county. Sometimes the old simplex radio
systems work better.
