K4ZRA FAST FACTS:

  • Licensed as KN4ZRA in 1958; Extra Class since 1963. Briefly held K7KX (1976-80) while living in AZ.
  • Hometown: Owensboro, Kentucky
  • Favorite Hams: son Ray (N8JWX, Silent Key, 1999) plus ex-K4TZP, Fr. Charlie Dittmeier, my all-time best buddy from seminary high school!
  • Occupation: Publisher, author
  • Favorite Ham Activity Today: Winter 160M CW contests!
  • Current equipment: misc. TEN-TEC
  • First equipment: WRL Globe Chief, 3 crystals then Heathkit VF-1, converted BC453, replaced by military Hallicrafters RX, and finally HRO50
  • Greatest Youthful Triumph: 4th Place, 1962 July ARRL CD Party
  • Biggest Bummer: All QSL cards from 1958-1964 ham-intense years lost in 1980 move from AZ! Over 100 DX countries worked with above gear!
  • Biggest-ever homebrew project: 304TL KW GG linear built while I was 17-19 (It DID put out about 150W!) (Maybe!)
  • Best Elmers: My Dad (SK, never licensed), K4UCS (SK, died of brain tumor at 30-something when I was 18), Al Haase, W4PFQ, George Wilson III, W4OYI
  • Favorite on-air contest contacts today: John, K4BAI, and Dave, K1ZZ, who still remember my name from the 1960's!
  • Greatest Embarrassment: QST ads by Gotham Antennas in early 1960's asking "Is K4ZRA the World's Champion DX Operator?" based on 40-50 contacts one summer using their cheapest vertical!
  • Next Greatest Embarrassment: I own a publishing company with offset printing shop, plus laser printers, and I haven't had my own QSL cards for several years!
  • Favorite Antenna Designs: simple verticals or groundplanes with earth ground and NO buried radials
  • Past aviation experience: private pilot, instrument rated, multi-engine land. Owned C172's, Mooney Ranger, Piper 6-300, Seneca II
  • My for-profit ham-related work: Writing and designing kit instruction manuals (since 1989), currently for TEN-TEC.

    The $24 T-KIT 1054:
the new "OCEAN HOPPER" for the new millenium?

  • K4ZRA Kit-Building Story: Knight/Allied "Ocean Hopper," WRL Globe Chief, WRL Screen Modulator, Heathkit VF-1, Heathkit phone patch, Western Radio 1-tube QRP rig, Lafayette FS meter, Knight Grid-dip meter, Heathkit SB220 and Active Antenna, Hamtronics 6M receive converter, lots of Ramsey Electronics stuff, MFJ kit prototypes, and more, including ALL T-KIT models to date!
  • QRP: It was great fun from our condo with a Heath HW9, but I like the TEN-TEC Centaur amp better!
  • CW: Ranks with fishing as pure relaxation!
  • Packet: The Internet is easier and more interesting
  • Packet DX spotting: Seems like cheating to me!
  • SAREX: neat!!!
  • Future of K4ZRA website: Depends! I run/host about ten others!

Watch for many great freebies coming soon at the T-KIT Resource Site which I've designed for web-surfing beginners, parents, families, Scouts, clubs and Electronics Instructors! Sorry, this exciting new URL is top secret for right now!

Keeping in mind that our QSL.NET is strictly non-commercial, I will not load up this K4ZRA personal site with more info from TEN-TEC or T-KIT!

This is the classic AC3L DOS freeware. The new Win95 version is also free and "nice" and also available from the same site, but I really urge you to enjoy the ready-to-run 100K DOS version and especially its nifty Receiver Simulation! Next best thing to "doing it" and not offered on the 2MB WinVersion download.
