Hey! It's better than working for a living!!

When it was determined that to stay in the Nuclear Industry I was going to have to move around, I took a long look at what I wanted to do with the rest of my life.

Being a contractor makes you fodder for the cannon in the client's eye. After a year of wearing out a Lazy Boy recliner watching the O.J. trial from start to finish and contemplating my next move, it hit me! "Start my own business". Not just any business, but a business in an area no one wants to work in because there is No Glamour, No Fancy Name/Title. Everyone today that is technically oriented wants to work in the computer business. There are more "Shade Tree" computer wizards out there than you can shake a stick at. I certainly didn't want to be thrown in that pile. So I looked at support devices and Laser Printers jumped out like a sore thumb.

I could honestly say that when I was around a printer that broke, no one knew what to do. If it jammed they waded in waist deep and ripped out the offending page leaving bits and pieces behind forcing yet another jam. Next step, call service. This usually meant a day or two at least of down time. That is if you were lucky and they fixed it on site. Or worse yet, told you to bring it to them and they would put you in line in order received. That's what every secretary wants to have to do, carry a 90 lb. printer to a car, drive 25 miles, unload it, and then be without for the next 10-20 days.

Then, there's the bill. If they come to your place of work, it's a 50-75 dollar show up charge plus 50-60 dollar/hr labor charge plus parts. I figured I could make a living by offering something no one else was "QUALITY SERVICE at AFFORDABLE RATES". No show up charge, 50-dollar labor fee (regardless if it took 5 min. or 5 hrs.) plus parts. I figured if it took me more than an hour, I had no idea what I was doing and deserved to bite the bullet.

To make a short story long, it worked. I only have 5 clients with a total printer count of around 200. I am making more money than I could have imagined and only work a couple of days a week. What can I say? I wish I had gotten smarter sooner. I would be retired by now!
