WHO AM  I ?

My name is Giancarlo Moda. I was born on the 21st of April, four days before Guglielmo MARCONI, he being on the 25th. The Stork dropped me in Follonica [see Photo], in the South of Tuscany in the province of Grosseto (North of the Maremma Toscana), while he was delivered around Pontecchio [see Photo], in the province of Bologna, in the Emilia Region, at about 250-300 Km (150 - 180 miles) in distance from my native place. As you may understand, we have different aspects in common: the same Italian nationality; we speak the same Italian language (more or less); the same initials, GM; the same zodiac sign, Taurus; we have interests on similar electrical gadgets; we have studied at the Technical Institute in the same city, Leghorn, in Tuscany; we did not do what our parents would have liked. I stop here to avoid I “chew-up” all those WEB’s GigaBytes available. Well, we do have something not in common too: he was born on the year 1874, I was born in 1940; he had a magnificent career, he did many experiments with the radio and built a solid technology empire, I did not! ... but  let’s cut the story short, at this point.  

My interests

 Following the reception of my Amateur Radio License, I had already home made Receiver, 17 tubes (AM, CW, SSB), [see photo] and AM/CW Transmitter [see photo], in an “excited Ham” status, I found myself wanting to do everything a radio amateur could do: home brewing, contests, building of antennas of every kind and sizes, operate on HF and VHF-UHF, portable from sea sites to mountains … and satellites; from CW to Phone AM, from SSB to FM, from RTTY to SSTV … and anything we could imagine in the 60s. Well, probably 1000 and 1 ideas …

The reality was completely different … I had to find a job, I had to look for a new one, different times, I had to work in different European Nations… the time available was not much, the necessary investments were even less, a family was “built” and quickly grew, and other happenings… all these aspects brought me back on the “Earth” … hi!

My interests were very much reduced, quickly and drastically, but retaining some “dreams”; home brewing of equipments (started but not completed), some wire antennas, some test equipment, some modifications of Jap Black Boxes, some DX … and a lot of hope for the future…hi!
