Yes, you can improve the R-1000 HF signal to noise ratio!

All you need to do is carefully remove all those nice 3SK74's using a solder sucker and hot soldering iron, and replace them with even nicer and quieter BF981's. Result - the set still works and you can actually hear the atmospheric hiss as you tune your ATU on 28Mhz SSB!

Anyone tried using BF988's? How do they compare with original 3SK74, or replacements like the BF981, 3SK88 etc at HF? They are supposed to be even quieter at HF than the BF981.

Tried upgrading the AM and SSB Filters? Anyone overcome the Digital Readout +/-2khz error on SSB?
