Module KVANT was added to MIR in 1987.

The goal of this module is the research of new galaxies, quasars and stars. The research is carried with the aid of spectrometers and different types of astrophysic analysis instruments. Also biotechnological experiments are lead.

In the KVANT there are instruments for the maintenance and control of MIR attitude and a unit of coupling for ships like SOYUZ and PROGRESS.
