MARCH 2005 MISSOURI SECTION NEWS
If you’ve never been to the Dayton
Hamvention, this might be just the year to attend the largest Hamfest in
the United States. This year’s event will include at least 10 ARRL-sponsored
forums and activities will highlight the ARRL’s 2005 National Convention,
which is being held in conjunction with Dayton Hamvention Friday through
Sunday, May 20-22. According to the ARRL Website, even more informative
forums are in the planning stages. This will be a great year for all ARRL
Members in the Missouri Section to attend the Dayton Hamvention. It
has been my experience that Dayton Hamvention is even bigger and better when
the ARRL National Convention is part of the mix. Good luck finding
a room near the Hara Arena and if you camp in a tent don’t camp next
to a small stream, they have a habit of getting bigger during the Hamvention.
The Missouri QSO Party is almost upon us. The
Boeing Amateur Radio Employees Society of St. Louis are sponsoring this year’s
Missouri QSO Party. . Jim Kinser, NØAJ will be leading
the B.E.A.R.S. sponsorship of the QSO Party and you can contact him at nØ
[email protected].
Those interested in operating this year need to mark your calendar
for April 2nd and 3rd. Categories include Fixed, MO Mobile, or MO
Rover and there are points for contacting WØMA, the B.E.A.R.S. Club
station plus several other important rules. For more information go
to http://www.qsl.net/wØma or checkout the write-up in the April
Issue of QST on page 99. This is a wonderful time for all Missouri
Amateurs to get on the air and make some contacts.

The 2005 Joplin Amateur Radio club Hamfest will be held
Friday evening, and all day Saturday April 29th and 30th at the John Q. Hammon's
Trade Center located east of South Rangeline in Joplin MO. The Hamfest
features interesting forums, volunteer exams and about 200 flea market tables.
This is always a great Hamfest because it draws vendors and Amateurs from
Kansas, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Missouri. The tables have been sold
out the past several years, so get your request in soon to Mark Mitchelson,
NØZPD, at 620-856-2531
[email protected] For more information
about the Joplin Hamfest check out http://www.joplin-arc.org
Electronic builders and low power enthusiast might want to consider attending
the Four State QRP Group’s OzarkCon convention that will be held on
the same weekend as the Joplin Hamfest. The Four State QRP Group’s
headquarters and their convention will be the Ramada Inn at 3320 Range Line
in Joplin. The Group has set aside times for their Convention attendees
to go to the Hamfest. Sounds like a fun weekend for any active QRPer
or Ham Radio Operator. For more information check out their website
for this year’s event at http://www.ozarkcon.com/ Last years
event was a great success and the Hams I’ve talked to are looking forward
to this years OzarkCon.
For a more or less complete list of Missouri Section Hamfest,
you can log on to the following link Missouri Hamfest 2005 Some of
those listed are my best guess as to when they will be held based on past
years. If you have a listed Hamfest, it is a good idea to get the event
sanctioned ASAP so it will be listed on the ARRL Website.

The Kansas City DX Club is one of the many
active groups in the Kansas City area. Their Newsletter is Edited by
Mike Crabtree, ABØX, and is filled with lots of funny stuff in addition
to great DX information and updates. A recent issue honored Johnny Marshall,
WØJM, a well known KCDXC member that has celebrated his 92 birthday.
Johnny is still regularly attending club meetings and sharing jokes and DX
tips.
The Central Bible College ARC W5CBC in Springfield, MO has
moved into its new Club Radio Shack in the Patterson Science Center. Rick
Woolverton, KIØBS is currently the Club’s Trustee and Advisor.
This club won the ARRL 2000 College School Club first place award.
When it comes to being involved in their communities, Kimberling
ARC is probably near the top of heap. In addition to their many public spirited
projects, the Kimberling ARC owns and operates a Two-Meter Repeater, KØEI
on 147.345Mhz and also operates a 440 repeater on 444.300Mhz. A Two-Meter
Packet Node "KFQ" on 145.09Mhz is also available along with a BBS, NØKFQ,
in Branson, MO. KARC owns an Emergency Mobile Unit, "Old Faithful",
equipped with both HF and VHF stations as well as a complete PACKET station.
The Emergency Management Agency has provided a station so that our unit can
be in communication with their mobile rig.
The Boeing Employees Amateur Radio Society has its second AL-82
Amplifier operational. Mark Grimes, WAØTOP, has been working
on getting the Amplifier up and running for the past couple of weeks.
Dave Propper, K2DP, carried out the smoke test and the unit was able to get
over 1,200 watts with 100 watts of drive. Irv Feldman, wrote in the BEARS
newsletter a nice little article about using industrial Velcro to hold a
footswitch in place during operating events like Field Day.

JANUARY 2005 MISSOURI SECTION NEWS
The State Emergency Management Agency is hosting
their Annual Crisis Communications Conference at Tan Tar A On Feburary
10th through February 12, 2005. Roger Volk, KØGOB and George
Schindler, WBØIIS will be presenting a program on Emergency Radio
Service on Friday Feb. 11th at 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Their program
follows Jim Kramper, of the St. Louis National Weather Service that starts
at 3:00 p.m.
On Saturday Kevin Brown, KBØSTN, Cole County ARES
and Susan Green of the Cole County EMD have a program on Coordination between
Emergency Management and Communications Volunteers at 9:45 – 10:45
a.m. The Conference is very informative and a great chance to get together
with many Amateur Radio Operators who are active in ARES, and
SKYWARN.
It is 2005 and time for all affiliated clubs
to update their club information. This can simply be done by going to
http://www.arrl.org/FandES/field/club/biglist.html and selecting
Missouri, finding your club (which will be listed alphabetically by city)
and at the bottom of the club data there is a hyperlink for a club officer
to update the club information. Note: If by chance your club has been
dropped because it has not updated its information in the past 3 years then
in addition to selecting Missouri you will need to select inactive club
to get the information about your group. Fill out the new President,
and etc and submit. This should get the club back on the active Affiliated
Club Roster. If you have some problems, contact the Section Manager
for assistance.
CONVENTIONS & HAMFESTS
I don’t like to repeat information in
the Section News, and since there are no Hamfest in Missouri during February
to let the membership know about, I decided to reprint the information about
the two great Hamfest that will be held in January after the Missouri Section
News has been posted and e-mailed..
The 15th annual Northwest Missouri Winter Hamfest, sponsored
by the Missouri Valley ARC and the Ray-Clay ARC, will be held January 15,
2005 at the Ramada Inn in St. Joseph, MO. To get to the Hamfest, take
exit 47 off I-29 and go west to the Ramada Inn. Parking is limited
at the motel, but there is a very efficient shuttle bus that will transport
folks from the Parking lot near Sears in the East Hills Mall. Advanced Admission
will be $3.00 each or two for $5.00. At the door the admission is $3.50
each or 2 for $6.00. Tables with two chairs are $15.00 each. There
is a limited number of tables with electricity available, so it is important
to reserve a table early. For Advanced tickets and tables, send your
request to the Northwest MO Winter Hamfest P.O. Box 1533 St. Joseph, MO
64502. If you need more info, feel free to contact Neal Makawski, WBØHNO
or Carlene Makawski, KAØIKS by phone at (816) 279-3406 or e-mail
[email protected] . There will be License Exams at 10:00 a.m. and as
in the past expect to have the opportunity to attend some interesting forums.
Winterfest 2005 sponsored by the St. Louis and Suburban
Radio Club, Inc. will be held January 22, 2005 in the Gateway Convention
Center in Collinsville, Illinois. The suggested route to get to the
Hamfest is to go 11 miles east of the St. Louis Arch and go south at Exit
#11 from I-55 / I-70 east. There are 300 exhibitor tables with new and used
Ham gear, Computers and Software. Tables will cost $20.00 without
electricity and $25.00 with electricity, while advanced tickets are $5.00
each ($6.00 at the door.) For more information about the Winterfest,
contact Jim Glascock at his e-mail address
wØ[email protected] or by phone at (636) 584-8888. You can
Mail for information to St. Louis & Suburban Radio Club P.O. Box
51 Union, MO 63084. Winterfest is one of the largest Hamfest
held in the St. Louis area, so it's always worth the effort to attend.

The Howell County Amateur Radio Club became an affiliated
club with the ARRL in 2004. HCARC President Larry Wilson, KØRWL,
reports that the club entered two floats in annual Christmas Parade City
of West Plains, Missouri. The first float was a trailer housing their 10
KW generator, field day antennas and electrical supplies. A banner
each side of the trailer stated; "Howell County Amateur Radio Club--When
disaster strikes, amateur radio (hams) keep the lights of communication open--hurricanes,
tornados, earthquakes, fires." Behind the first float was our #2 unit,
a flat bed trailer decorated with garland and lights. Mounted on the
trailer was a section of Rohn 25G complete with a operating rotor and 7
element 2 meter beam with Christmas lights attached. Also mounted
was a table with operating position and straight key. Their newest
ham, KC0TCX manned the table and rotated the beam approximately every 2-3
minutes and using a straight key he made the lights on the beam flash. The
creativity of the float resulted in the club entry winning a $300.00 prize.
The funds will be used to purchase a local repeater. Those participating
are: AAØWX, NØWJH, KCØRRQ, KCØRXR, KCØQFA,
KCØTCX and KØRWL. Congratulations to the Howell County
ARC for winning the prize and for the excellent public relations effort they
made.
I was sorry to learn from Donn Hornberger,
President of the Jefferson Barracks ARC, that the JBARC club would be dissolved
and their website taken down as of January 8, 2005. The JBARC has been
in existence for 55 years, but with membership at a level that could not
sustain pertinent activities they decided to call it quits. The July
20, 2005 Hamfest that JBARC was sponsoring has been canceled.
Kimberling ARC elected new officers for 2005.
Dean KØPHI is the new Pres. Gary, KØJGS is the VP, Bob
AAØHE is the Sec. and Harvey, WBØQKE is the Treas.Harvey, K9MVY,
is stepping down as the editor of Squelch Tale the KARC Newsletter and I
know that everyone appreciated his excellent efforts.
FYI: ARRL Affiliated Clubs receive a commission
for every new ARRL membership and renewal they submit to ARRL Headquarters.
Under the ARRL Club Commission Membership Recruitment Program, clubs retain
$15 for each NEW membership and $2 for each renewal submitted (regular and
senior memberships only). A NEW MEMBER is defined as any individual who has
never been a member of ARRL or any individual who has not retained a membership
for two or more calendar years prior to the application submission. A RENEWING
MEMBER can renew at anytime, even before their current membership term expires.
This is a good way for a club to maintain the ARRL membership base.

MISSOURI SECTION NEWS
NOVEMBER 2004 MISSOURI SECTION NEWS
The month of November is the month of Thanksgiving.
I thought perhaps in addition to dealing with the many concerns of the Amateur
Radio Service, it would be a good time to think about what we have to be
thankful for. I personally am thankful for all of the talented Amateur Radio
Ops in Missouri that have volunteered to be ARRL appointees and a special
thanks to those that have accepted the additional responsibilities of being
a Section Cabinet member. We can be thankful for all of the Amateurs that
volunteer their time, equipment and sometimes even safety to help their
fellow citizens in times of emergencies as members of ARES, SATURN and SKYWARN.
Amateurs and all citizens can be thankful for all of the innovations and
inventions that have been brought into the world by Hams. All Amateurs
can be thankful for families that either tolorate or sharing in our love
of electronic communication. We are thankful for all of the MARS operators
that have and continue to assist our troops by handling messages to and from
home. All Amateurs need to be thankful for Hiram Percy Maxim and the other
visionaries that founded the ARRL. Because without the efforts of the ARRL
and that of the Amateur Radio operators that have supported the ARRL, Amateur
Radio would look far different than it does today. You've probably
got the message by now, we Amateurs have lots of things to be thankful for
and it is impossible to make a complete list. If you have some suggestions,
pass them on, I would be interested in reading about some of the things for
which you are thankful.
HAM'S BOOK PUBLISHED
Ken Ralls, NØAUZ, from Clarence, MO has written
a book about adventure in the South Pacific called McKay's Island.
The book is a fun read and suitable for everyone in the family. The
story is based on the experiences of U.S. Navy Captain Dan McKay, along with
his family and a small Navy crew, occupies an uninhabited island near the
Marshall Islands in the Pacific. Soon after their arrival they enlist the
aid of a native family from a neighboring island to help in buildings construction
while the Navy crew clears the island of hazards from its use as Navy bombing
practice. There are many unexpected twists on McKays Island, from a sleeping
volcano to human skeletons from World War II found in a sea cave. With the
help of amateur radio and a Piper J-3 Cub airplane, the McKay family is
always having adventures on McKays Island. To find out more about
this book, go to the following internet site.

CONVENTIONS & HAMFESTS
The Southwest Missouri ARC Hamfest in Springfield, MO was
a rousing success. Patrick Boyle, KØJPB, ARRL MO ASM hosted
the ARRL booth. Patrick did his usual great job in representing the
ARRL and sharing his knowledge with those that attended. Patrick reports that
there were 17+ that participated in the License exam at the Hamfest. SMARC
President Lance Riffle, KCØKBL and Roger Grable, N7IXL, did a fine
job organizing the Hamfest. I was sorry to miss the SMARC Hamfest this
year (because it was on the same date as the St. Louis ARC Hamfest in Kirkwood),
but I am looking forward to seeing everyone there in 2005.
The St. Louis ARC Hamfest in Kirkwood, Missouri or as it
is usually described the "Halloween Hamfest" was excellent. There were
more commercial exhibitors, more flea marketeers, more Hams in attendance
and more children helping themselves to the candy at the ARRL Booth than
in the past. All the tables were filled with an interesting assortment
of Flea Market goodies and the day seemed to fly by. Steve Welton,
WØSLW, and the group deserve a big pat on the back for doing such
an excellent job this year. If you live in the St. Louis region and
didn't attend, you missed a good one.
There are no more Hamfest or Conventions scheduled for
the remainder of 2004. It's not too early to begin the process of registering
your club's hamfest as an ARRL Sanctioned Hamfest in 2005. The application
can be filled out on line and e-mailed to Wade Walstrom, WØEJ, the
Midwest Director for his approval. Next month's Section News will highlight
the January Hamfest and have a "Hypothetical Hamfest Calendar" put together
for 2005.

The event under the leadership of Bob Mitchell, AB9DU, will be from Dec
3rd to Dec. 12th. Bob is organizing another special events station
K9E that is known as "On the Mississippi with the Eagles", but the date of
this operating activity has not been set at this time.
The Southwest Missouri ARC had Jon Fitzpatrick, KNØX
share his experiences with "Radio-Over-Internet" with the membership at
a recent meeting. Jon uses EQSO and ECHOLINK and enjoys sharing his
knowledge that is the result of his long time operation using this mode.

Check out Patrick Boyles, KØJPB,
information about the Earthquake Exercise in the ARES section of the MO
Section News. You might be interested in participating or just listening
in on the activity. Last year it was wall to wall activity.
Field Day 2004 was fantastic. The
weather was reasonable, if a little cool at times, and QRN was down significantly
when compared to Field Day 2003. This year you could even make a
significant number of contacts on 10 meters and 15 meters. A large
number of Field Day operations sent Field Day reports to the MO Section
Manager utilizing the Missouri Section Traffic Net.
Edwin Karl, KØKL, has moved from
San Rafael, CA to Warrenton, MO. Ed has transfered his OO appointment
to the Missouri Section. Jim Harrell, MO Section OOC has approved his
transfer and appointment as an OO in Missouri.
FYI, The Lewis and Clark expedition will
have a special event operation from July 30 through August 4. The
station, WØL, will operate from Fort Atkinson State Park North
of Omaha, NE. A commerative QSL card for a contact will be available with

HOUSE BILL 822 SIGNED BY GOVERNOR
The effort to add the tower pre-emption
of PRB-1 of the FCC regulations has been successful. On June 24, 2004 Governor

We need to send a "Thank You" e-mail to Blaine Luetkenmeyer (

this legislation. If you go to the Thanks to the efforts of Missouri
ARRL Section leaders, John Baremore, KCØCRO and all of Amateur

Missouri Amateurs Radio operators now have another level of protection
for their rights to have towers.
