Greetings to All Alaskan Amateurs...
ACWN (Alaska CW Net) is still there...AL7N continues to monitor the two
frequencies 3534 khz and 7042 khz as continuously as possible, which
usually means from the time I get home from work (about 730 pm) until
about 10 am the following morning (all night), except for short periods
when I might be out running around town doing errands etc. I send out
the "CQ" call at somewhat irregular intervals throughout the period at
approximately 12 WPM. Listen on the hour, and at 15, 30, and 45 minutes
past the hour. KL5T and AL7N usually relay traffic back and forth late
in the evening, approximately 0700Z plus or minus an hour or so.
We haven't had much response from anyone who may be listening in, and
therefore we do not know how many amateurs may be doing so.
ACWN does monitor Bush Net and Motley Group when possible, however AL7N
is not at home during the scheduled time of Sniper's net.
It has to be understood that while KL5T and AL7N operate at pretty fast
code speed doing our message relay work, high CW speed is certainly not
required for anyone to check into ACWN. We don't want that to run anyone
off. The operating speed is expected to be governed by that what is
comfortable for the receiving operator. So, If anyone anywhere wants to
check into ACWN even at 5 or 10 WPM, please do not hesitate to do so...
we'll slow down for you. It is important that we get as many amateurs
listening on the calling frequencies as continuously as possible. We'd
be happy to hear from anyone at any time. Bring us some traffic!
I know there are "CW capable" folks out there (just listen during any
contest, or on Snipers/Bush/Motley nets!), so don't let the code speed be
a hurdle. Give us a call anytime you hear the "CQ" message. We would
appreciate signal reports, weather reports from your area, and of course,
any third party traffic you may have for "outside" or other points within
Alaska. It is good emergency/disaster preparedness excercise. Remember
our little earthquake not too long ago?????
As a side note, I have heard from an EMCOMM group in California. They are
also adopting a "listening watch" operation almost exactly like ACWN on the
frequencies 3705 and 7105 khz down in that area.
Hope to be hearing more of you on ACWN...Everyone is welcome. Call us on
either frequency, we listen to BOTH of them all the time.
