W6PT Field Day 2001 20

W6PT Field Day Site

For Field Day in 2001, I was part of the San Diego DX Club's FD effort at the Point Loma Amateur Radio Club site on Point Loma, CA overlooking the beautiful Pacific Ocean and the entrance to San Diego Bay.  The weather was cool with a nice ocean breeze and low hanging fog at night.  We could see sail boats in San Diego Bay and dolphins jumping in the ocean during the day.  Our goal was to take first place in the 2A division with a top-notch operator team  Our score at W6PT was better than last year's 2A winner and when all the results are in we will see how we did.  I have added a FD2001 Statistics page for those interested in the 20/80 results. A great time was had by all and we look forward to next year!  Here are some of the pictures from the event:

Our roadside Publicity featuring Jim Price, K6ZH and his faithful companion, Lori.  The table was on the side of the road which leads to the Point Loma Lighthouse.  Many people stopped and asked what we were doing and took the time to tour the operation and wonder at the antennas.

More Crew: (left to right): AK6R, KD6QK, NZ6T (SM), K6AM, K6LL(front), N6VS (back), K6ZH.  (Note the reflection of the UFO in the red truck window.)
KD6QK tower to the left with 5 element 10, 2 meter and 6 meter beams.

AK6R tower to right with Flag at 73 feet, 2 element 40 at 66 feet, 4 element 20 at 61 feet and the 5 element 15 at 38 feet.  We had about 20 knots of wind at the top of the tower all day making for a nice flag picture.  The antennas were pointed about 60 degrees to the east.  We never had to rotate them although there are two rotators on the AK6R tower.  One for the bottom antenna and one for the top two antennas.  The antennas in the background are the Point Loma ARC antennas.  We put the tower trailer antennas up in the parking lot north of the club trailer.  Elevation was about 450 feet above sea level with drop off to left (east) and right (west).

More Pictures of both antennas

The R7000 vertical antenna looking out over the Pacific Ocean from the Field Day site.  Look closely to see the dolphins in the water and the yellow hummingbird on the R7000 radial.
15/40 Station

Rick ( N6CY) on the left and Chief Op, John (K6AM) on the right.  Three keyboards to share!

Rick, N6CY, gets his turn in the hot seat.  I don't think he ever wore his designer earphones!
John (K6AM) shows Dave (K6LL) how to use the "Insert" key for CW contacts.

WX Note: Dave had his sweatshirt on because he thought 75 degrees was "cold" compared to the 110 degrees in Yuma!

Novice/Tech Station with Chief Op Mike (N6SBX) working everybody on 10 meters!
Six and Two Meter Station Chief Op and Field Day Chairman, Jim Price (K6ZH). Jim worked a record number of six meter stations all over the country!
Harv, KD6QK working two meters.  Harv also made additional solar-powered contacts on 2 meters for our bonus points, and had time to cook up the best steak and beans we've ever had!.
20/80 Station with Dave (K6LL) on left and Joe (W6OVO) on the right supervising Dave's code speed!  Dave wasn't using earphones this time.
Dave (K6LL) gets serious and puts on earphones and is working CW contacts faster and faster and faster.....

Many thanks to Mike (N6TYF) and Rick (N6CY) from Point Loma ARC for hospitality and site.  Many thanks to Jim Price (K6ZH) and others for escorts in/out of the site after dark.

Certain operators would like to give special thanks to the powder puff girls who visited at 12:00 midnight on Saturday - our QSO rate went way up after your rally session!
