Electric Motors and My Job

I work at Baldor Electric Company as an Electrical Design Engineer.  My primary duty is applying electrical specifications to fit customer orders.  If there are no existing designs which will work, I will design a motor that will.  I work primarily with motors 250 thru 440 NEMA frames.  This generally goes from 7.5 thru 400 Hp, depending on the speed and enclosure of the motor.

I use a program developed in house by Baldor to calculate the performance of a design.  This program uses Fortran for the calculations with a Pascal front end as a user interface.  I also use spreadsheets to predict some of the characteristics of a motor.  Some of these characteristics include safe stall times, time to accelerate an inertia as well as some common calculations involving horsepower, speed and torque.
