So You Want To Be A Ham?

Where Do I Start?

The rules for earning an Amateur Radio license vary depending on which country you live. In the Philippines, there are four license levels, or "license classes" (Novice Class, Technician Class, General Class and Advance Class). These licenses are granted by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) of the Department of Transportation and Communication.

It's Easy to Get Started

The most popular license for beginners is the Novice Class license or Class D, which requires only a 75 multiple-choice question written examination. The test is written with the beginner in mind. Morse Code is not required for this license. With a Novice Class license, you will have all ham radio privileges from 144.000 to 146.000 megahertz (MHz). These privileges include the very popular 2-meter band. Many Novice licensees enjoy using small (2 meter) hand-held radios to stay in touch with other hams in their area. Others operate on VHF Base, Mobile or portable with 100 watts maximum output power where they can have contacts in more distant areas.

Getting started in Amateur Radio has never been easier. First, locate a radio club in your area. Some radio clubs offer ham radio licensing classes, or they can find a club volunteer to answer your questions. You may even be invited to attend a local radio club meeting.

If by chance you are from our region here in Region 8 (Amateur Radio District 5), Eastern Visayas, Philippines, the Circle of Integrated Radio Communication Link for Emergency, Inc. conducts a ham radio orientation-seminar at least twice a year. Review classes are also given every before an NTC Amateur Licensure examination. You may contact the local club through E-Mail or write to P.O.Box 87, TCPO, Tacloban City 6500, Philippines.

For amateurs living in other parts of the Philippines, you may contact the Philippine Amateur Radio Assocation thru E-Mail. Back to Top
