Greetings and welcome to my home-page.  This site is currently under construction so please check back from time to time to see what has been added. 73 de Allan.

My name is Allan Chandler and I am an Amateur Radio Operator and my callsign is ZL2SKY. The "ZL" in my callsign identifies me as being from New Zealand. I have been a licensed radio operator since November 30th 1992. Back in those days you could only sit the Amateur Radio Exam twice a year. I sat mine in the September and immediately started learning Morse code so when I sat my Morse exam and passed at the Radio Inspectors Office I was a "Full Call Holder" from the time I made my first amateur radio contact.

I was asked by the Radio Inspector why I wanted the callsign of ZL2SKY to which I replied "Well hopefully the "SKY" is where my signals will be going through around the world", he just smiled and gave a slight chuckle and wished me all the best.

To learn how to become a radio amateur in NZ the following link will take you to a page on our National Associations website where you can teach yourself all about amateur radio and you can use the interactive study guide to help you on your way: NZART STUDY GUIDE

Age is no barrier to obtaining an amateur radio license. In 2004 my daughter Allison was one of five people who sat the amateur exam through our local club, which is the Manawatu Amateur Radio Society. At the time Allison sat and passed her exam she was 11 years old, the oldest who sat and passed the exam on that day was 80 years young. The photo below was taken on the day that Allison passed her examination.
