Jumbo Trophy - Indoor Bowls
Inter Club indoor bowls challenge started in 1992. Arthur 'Jumbo' Godfrey, ZL1HV introduced this activity to radio clubs in the Auckland area in conjunction with the Albany Indoor Bowls Club. Albany, on the northern limits of Auckland was the placec to be on the third Wednesdays in March and October of each year. Always a great night with a very warm welcome extended from the Albany Indoor Bowls Club members.
The evening normally strats with a welcome from the Albany Club and the draw of teams is placed on the board. During the challenge of three games, radio club teams are put against each other twice and one of the Albany teams. Draws are random and sometimes you're lucky and other times not quite so!
Over the years, there have been some very very close games and some close final results for the evenings activity. There have been games won on the last bowl of the game and evenings won in the same manner. Most of the radio team members do not normally play indoor bowls as a hobby rather just these two times a year.
Clubs from most Auckland Clubs have participated at one time or another. Of more recent times, clubs include Whangaparoa, North Shore, Auckland VHF, Western Suburbs and Papakura. WQe have seen a slight fall off from radio clubs attending and also the Albany Club members and we now have just 4 mats laid out rather than the 6 in earlier years.
Photos on this page shows the action form over the years. Not in any order but shows the fun we have during the evening.
The Inter-Service Indoor Bowls challenge started on 1997. Papakura Radio Club members challenge teams from the Papakura District Council, Lions, Rotary, Probus, and the RSA Ladies Bowls group. We play at the RAs and the Papakura Radio Club on alternate years.
During the evenings, the draw is done on the night and we play the 3 games of 7 ends and the evening concludes with a supper.
Probus has had its share of wins as have Lions and the RSA Ladies. Our club members have won a couple of times and a record of all the wins is etched on the trophy which is held in our clubrooms cabinet.
