Betty became a silent key on 23rd February 1998 after a very short illness. Betty had been associated with WARO since 1971. Her cheerful nature was bound to brighten any occasion whether is be NZART Conferences, YL get-togethers, during contests or normal contacts. Her reputation for having fun was known by all. She was the co-inventor of the NZART Conference Sunday afternoon Bus Bowls competition where any objects that could stand up could be used as pins, and missiles ranging from apples, oranges or anything slightly circular were used as bowls. She was even keen to introduce the sport to our Trans-Tasman neighbours in Perth at the ALARAMEET get-together.

There was one time at a conference in Christchurch where she was able to convince Bob that as a good OM he should ride in the boot of a very small car for a short distance , so that a YL could have a ride back to the motel! Along with Lyn ZL2PQ, it was Betty and her friend Marion who miraculously produced a large plaster cast on the bus in Hamilton last year. And how could we forget the Blenheim conference when the normal Sunday bus group had a wonderful afternoon touring in a minivan and keeping their thirst quenched with orange juice. Suddenly realising they had a reputation to keep, they made a magnificient exit from the van at the end of the day and an extremely good effort of convincing a large number of onlookers that it hadn't been just orange juice they had been drinking- I assure you it was! I personally will never forget arriving in Perth late at night with the New Zealand contingent for the ALARA get-together, and being met by Bob and Betty, who had arrived earlier via Scotland, complete with Red Hair and Tam O Shanters.

But the biggest surprise that Betty ever gave us was when after many years being a staunch supporter of Amateur Radio, she became an operator in her own right and the call ZL1UBZ was heard. Betty worked hard for Amateur Radio, as a hostess for international conferences, in car rallies, for the Branch, and as a great supporter for OM Bob. She always gave her best.

She was the lady who made sure everyone was included and even the quietest of people doing things and getting involved. We will always remember the bright smile, the hats, the laughter, the singalongs, the broad Scottish accent, the haggis, the tartans and the unconditional love and friendship she gave us all.

To Bob and all the family both in New Zealand and overseas we offer our most heartfelt condolences. Betty enriched all our lives and nothing will ever be quite the same for any of us again.

Celia ZL1ALK and Eileen ZL1BRX were able to present Betty with a bouquet of flowers and the WARO Certificate of Merit for her contribution to Amateur Radio prior to her passing away.
