MORE ON PALERMO
If anyone has a magnifying glass you would see the moisture on
our faces! Hot sunshine and a 30+C temperature greeted us even
at the 8.30.am roll call for the Official photos. Not only was
there a professional photographer on site, the OMs did their
bit too by lining up to take their personal photo shots. We had all been given special sportshirts to wear with the
YL2002 Logo. Dark blue for the OMs and two shades of blue for
the YLs. What a wonderful souvenir to bring back home. This
was not all, many more Sicilian delights awaited us what with
Lemonello liqueur, a basket of marzipans made into the colour
and shape of fruit, place mats and a scarf - and personalised
terracotta plaques were presented to us at the YL Forum - so
much to see and to take in.
Ruth IT9ESZ and her team did us proud. Ruth came with us for 3
out of the 5 days tour of Sicily returning by bus to Palermo
in time to meet and greet another group of YLs arriving for
the weekend. We had the privilege of being shown
her QTH and welcomed by the family with cold drinks - have you
ever tasted the juice of blood oranges - fantastic! We also
had a peep at the 'shack' where all the hard work had been
done.
Cathy ZL2ADK, myself and our OMs had elected to stay at the
family run hotel, the Conchiglio D'Oro. In all there were 18
YL2002 participants staying there and we had a 20 minute walk
to and from the Hotel La Torre. Eventually we
worked out which free bus to catch! But it was worth it.
Terrible footpaths! A wonderful beach at Mondello for
swimming, if you could get into the private areas, crowds out
at night dining and socialising in the squares.
We invited the YLs back to our 'place' for the Sunday night
meal and 50 of the 110 participants took us up on the offer.
For 10 Euro, the hotel did us proud. It was a fitting finale
to a wonderful event.
