An Account of our YL2000 Meet by Jacqueline ZLlJAQ
interspersed with extracts from speeches, letters, and comments from others.

29 September at the Novotel Tainui Hotel
On Friday afternoon 29 September there was a welcome desk at the Novotel Hotel where attendees to the YL2000 could register, and collect grab bags and commemorative badges. The white Yaesu bags were donated by Com-Centre. With others I was able to meet and greet the DXers and ZLs alike. A very friendly atmosphere prevailed and set the scene for a wonderful weekend. Gary Jacobs who represented Radio Spectrum Management, issued licences on the spot for those who required them during their stay in New Zealand.

Raija SM0HNV - After the dinner on the Friday evening a number of meeting particpants gathered in my room fur singing. It was so enjoyable. When I next morning was wondering, if we did dissturb neighbour rooms people, they kindly said:" No, no, it sounded very nice " I hope they were honest.

30 September am at the Hamilton Gardens Pavilion
Sharron ZL3AE -The next morning found us all at the Gardens Pavilion to meet and greet many whom I have talked to but not met. All my previous conceptions of people flew out the window (why do people so seldom look as I expect them to?) Luckily I had taken WARO badges, lapel pins and stickers, so was able to set them up on a table for sale and meet Lee-Ann ZL2TLO.

What a find! She was immediately helpful, kind and we shared lots of laughter. Thanks Lee-Ann fur wonderful memories.

Saturday morning saw the formal commencement of International YL2000. Cathy ZL2ADK began: Before we start the official part ufuur opening, you will notice that there is a single lack of any major identification of WAR0 and its part in this gathering. To put this matter right I would like to hand over to Dennis ZL2BFI OM of our great suppurter and friend - Dawn ZL2AGX - who passed away, just over one year ago.

Dennis Young ZL2BFI
I want to present this banner to WAR0 in memory of my late dear wife, Dawn ZL2AGX. I hope it will serve on many future Occasions as a reminder of the wunderful friendships that are made through amateur radio. . . . . Any ham Can tell you "The best way to meet strangers who are scattered far and wide and make friends of them is on the amateur radio bands. " I can tell you the YLs are showing us the way to make those friendships even closer and stronger through the international sponsership schemes and meetings like YL 2000, The commi#ee arranging YL 2000 made a mistake when they invited me to tell you about Dawn - after all we have only a couple of days together!
This banner is
a fitting memorial
