The First Emergency Number -999

The worlds first emergency phone number to contact all emergency services, (Fire, Police and Ambulance) was put in place in Britain with the introduction of the "999"system in 1937.

The first "999"call to the Police was at 4.20am on 8 July 1937 when John Stanley Beard of 33 Elsworthy Rd Hampstead, London disturbed a burglar. Mrs. Beard dialed 999 while her husband pursued the suspect on foot. The Police responded within 5 minutes and the burglar, one Thomas Duffy was captured.
