Arad, city in western Romania, capital of Arad County. The city is on the Mureş River, near the Hungarian border. Industries include locomotive, machine-tool, and textile manufacturing; flour milling; and distilling. Founded in the 11th century, Arad was under Turkish, Austrian, and Hungarian rule until 1920, when it passed to Romania.
