"Cooking"
This was the largest and best Field Day XWARN has hosted in the last 10 years! It just keeps getting better! From the beginning, we had 2 real goals: Have fun and eat well. We did that in spades! Along the way we let the community know about all modes of amateur radio.
Call: WS8B 4A Ohio
Location: Greene County Fairgrounds
Number of people participating (including spouses/friends) : about 50
Transmitters in continuous operation 4 plus satellite station.
Points:
162 CW contacts X2(CW) X2 (power less than 150 watts) = 648
312 Phone contacts X2 (power less than 150 watts) = 624
4 transmitters = 400
100% emergency power: = 100
Media publicity (Channel 2 was fun, huh!) = 100
Location in public place (Fairgrounds) = 100
Information Booth = 100
Message to Section manager = 100
W1AW Field Day message copied = 100
Satellite QSO (We had 6 plus one dupe) = 100
Natural power (5 required QSOs, we had over a hundred) =100
Total 2472
Pretty cool for a club which was not even trying to collect points!
States: A bunch! Charlie would be glad to be recognized for snagging both Alaska and Hawaii. I know we had Puerto Rico and at least one European station.
Proofs of Bonus Points turned into the ARRL:
Emergency Power: For operations not conducted with Natural Power, all other power was from two gasoline powered generators operated in an alternating pattern every 6 hours.
Media Publicity: Great success! Attached is the press release we modeled from the one in the Field Day packet. Our local Dayton Channel 2 came out and filmed just as field day was starting. We were featured in the 6 PM and 11 PM news as “Practicing to get it right, so that any emergency could be met!” In the pictures, note the Channel 2 truck.
Location in a public place. We set up, as always, in the part of the Greene County Fairgrounds that borders Fairgrounds Road, a main road between Xenia Ohio and Beavercreek Ohio. A sign identified our encampment as the XWARN field day site (If the 30 foot crank up tower with tri-band beam didn’t get their attention beforehand!)
Information Booth: Among the pictures find one of N8OIE ready to pass out information displayed by N8ACU.
Message Origination: Attached is the serviced message.
Field Day message: Attached is the field day message as we copied it on Saturday Evening. We made a few corrections when we listened to the phone message, but it was very difficult to hear the phone message over QRM. CW worked much better.
Satellite: Attached is the dupe sheet for our Satellite contacts. We were able to make use of FO-20 and AO-10.
Natural Power: We used a small 5 watt solar panel, a 10 watt panel, and a wind generator (AIR 403) rated at 400 watts at 26 mph wind. It made sense that we would have either sun or wind as we were planning. All 7 satellite contacts were made exclusively from a battery charged only with the 5 watt solar panel. Our first 44 15M Phone contacts were made with Wind Generated Power as were 16 10 M phone and 46 of our 80 M contacts. 47 10 M contacts and 2 80M contacts were made with the battery charged solely by the 10 watt solar panel. Grand total of natural power contacts was 162.
