This web page's purpose is to provide information for Cyclone Amateur
Radio Club members about the use of Wavecomm Jr. video transmitters and
receivers for Amateur Television (ATV) purposes. At the club picnic
this spring, some of us talked about the possibility of putting up an ATV
repeater with a 70cm output which may easily be received by a cable ready
TV set to cable 57 - 60 or with a 420-440 MHz down converter to a standard
channel 3 television.
Since Radio Shack currently has the Wavecomm Jr. units on closeout
sale at $99.97 for a transmitter and receiver pair, it was thought that
this may be a great way for club members to uplink to a repeater (in the
2.4 GHz ham band) fairly inexpensively. I was asked to
provide the information I had found, in various articles, as a web page
so that interested members may view it online. The information provided
here shows how they may be modified for ATV use by licensed Technician
class or higher hams. As is, these devices are intended for part
15, unlicensed operation. Two of the four channels are inside the
ham band (1 & 4). The following modifications may only be performed
by licensed Technician class or higher hams. Once the unit has been
modified, they may only be used on channels 1 & 4 which are in the
ham band, and you must identify with your call sign (on the voice channel
is ok or hold up a card with your callsign for video or use a computer,
etc) every ten minuits and at the end of the communication. The content
of your transmissions must also conform to FCC rules and you must abide
by all the FCC rules CFR 47 part 97 as you would with any other ham radio.
The information here is provided for your education only. No warranty
is made or implied. It is suggested that if you purchase these units,
you should use them as is for a while as part 15 unlicensed low power devices
and don't perform any modifications yet. If you are interested in
modifiying them for Amateur Service it would probably be best to wait until
fall and we could do this together as a club project. If you are
uncomfortable with performing the modifications yourself, I'm sure
one of the experienced project builders will be glad to help out.
Read the following information and I would appreciate hearing/seeing your
comments, thoughts, ideas, etc. Have a great summer and see you next
fall. If you are going to be around this summer and wish to do some
experimenting with ATV please email me. I would appreciate the help
and some people to "bounce" ideas off of. [email protected]
