Dear DBHS '48 Classmates:
In the
comics today is the incomparable Peanuts strip and Snoopy is on the
dog house roof as Lucy tells him she has been reading Thomas Wolfe's "You
Can't Go Home Again " and challenges him to write something like
that. So, typing away, still on top of the dog house, Snoopy writes, "You
Can Go Home Again If You Want To."
We who were
most fortunate to attend our 50th Reunion for the Dobyns-Bennett
High School Class of 1948 knew many others wanted to be there,
but had reasons they could not. We hope they felt like they were
with us too, because we missed them and felt incomplete without them.
As we gathered
together, sometimes we didn't recognize each other, but that
didn't last very long. You could feel the excitement build. We never
laughed that much in high school. It was such a happy time together.
We shared old pictures and took new ones, and our stories were never
ending. Even better than Lake Wobegon, for a time so brief, this was real,
we were here, and the gals were gorgeous and the guys more handsome.
The DB
Class of '48 took this "Sentimental Journey" to that long ago and
faraway place, and once more we felt very dear to each other as we
shared news of friends,
classmates, families and our lives. Together again, we shared meals
, we listened to each other and to a combo that played our favorite hit
songs from the forties.
We mourned
the thirty nine classmates who have died since that May 31, 1948. We remembered
our teachers and were glad for the four who attended and wondered how it
is that they look younger than we do? We loved the beautiful
letter from a teacher
who was unable to attend. There were six classmates we could not find.
We were very sad as we found out about classmates who are ill.
Like the song
we heard again that evening, our "Sentimental Journey"
did renew old memories and did take us back in time and we were given
much to reflect upon.
We came very near to that faraway place, DBHS, but we couldn't really go
there, except on this magical and Golden weekend,
when we could see and even touch those times, but only in our hearts.
Yeah right! Snoopy.
'48 Hugs
Your Classmate
P.S. I am sure that
Miss Ramer, especially, would forgive my mistakes, (grammatical ones
only, and I am really glad I have a spell-checker!) |
