IOTA NA-144, USI CA-012S, Santa Barbara County, Channel Islands National Park

This was the very first activation of NA-144, in 1992, with my former call KK6ZO. I stayed at Scorpion Ranch and operated from the old barn. In one photo, I'm stringing up the dipole on top of a windmill. Santa Cruz got its name when a priest on the 1542 Cabrillo expedition lost his pectoral cross on the island after saying Mass. The Chumash Indians had found it and followed the Spanish ship to return it to the grateful priest, who then called the island "The Island of the Holy Cross".

Esta era la primera activación de NA-144, en 1992, con mi previo indicativo KK6ZO. Quedaba en el Rancho Escorpión y operaba desde el granero viejo. En una foto, estoy montando un dipolo encima de una molina. La isla recibió su nombre cuando un sacerdote en la expedición de Cabrillo de 1542 perdió su cruz pectoral después de Misa. Los indios Chumash la había encontrado y siguieron el buque español para devolverla al sacerdote agradecido, quien entonces la llamó "La Isla de la Santa Cruz".
