San Miguel

San Miguel is the most distant of the Channel Islands from Ventura.  As the island furthest to the west and therefore most exposed, it takes the full battering of the Pacific and is often shrouded in fog.  This was the last of the 5 islands in the Channel Islands National Park that I activated (July 2000), and was the most difficult.  The boat ride itself was long: over 5 hours.  After transferring to a skiff for landing on the beach, we crossed over a half-mile of sand before reaching firm ground. Then up a very steep, narrow, and rugged trail for another half-mile to the campground.  I had to make several trips, carrying the battery, antenna, tent, water and food. San Miguel had previously been activated by a park ranger, but this was the first expedition.

La isla San Miguel es la isla más lejos de Ventura.  Como es la isla más extrema al oeste y entonces más expuesto, sufre toda la fuerza del Pacífico y frecuentamente está cubierta en niebla.  Era la última de las 5 islas del Parque Nacional Islas de la Mancha que activaba (julio 2000), y era la más difícil.  El viaje mismo dura más de 5 horas.  Después de trasbordar a la lancha para llegar a la playa,  cruzamos un kilómetro de arena antes de llegar a tierra firma.  Entonces subimos un sendero escarpado, estrecho, y rugoso otro kilómetro para llegar al sitio de acampar.  Tuve que hacer muchos viajes, llevando la batería, antena, tienda, agua y comida. San Miguel ha sido activado previamente por un oficial del parque, pero esta era la primera expedición.
