OpenVMS for Amateur Radio
Tired of the limitations of DOS and M$SOFT?
LINUX too hard to learn?
Compaq Computer Corporation now offers a FREE hobby license to use OpenVMS/VAX.
It is easier to use than LINUX, and far more powerful than DOS and Windoze.
A wide range of hardware is available cheap. In most cases the trick is to find it before it reaches the dumpster. Used equipment is also readily available on the Wierd Wild Web. Usually much cheaper than the equivalent in PC hardware.
Depending on what hardware you aquire, an OpenVMS system can be connected to multiple packet modems, RTTY modems, and highspeed equipment, all at the same time as it is doing useful things on your home network.
OpenVMS supports most of the UN*X programming library, so many UN*X programs can be easily ported. It also has a native programming interface that allows really high performance programs to run on low cost hardware.
