The following is an announcement for a course at San Jose State University:

"Electrical Requirements of Microelectronic Packaging"
------------------------------------------------------

Semester: Fall 2000
Course: E242
Name: Electrical Requirements of Microelectronic Packaging
Class meetings: Saturdays Sep 2 thru Dec. 16, 2000; 9am -12 noon
Place: Room Engineering 403 (SJSU)
Instructor: Raj Raghuram
email: [email protected]

Text: High-Speed Digital Design by Howard Johnson and Martin Graham,
Prentice-Hall.

With clock speeds getting higher day by day, the electrical properties of
packages, printed circuit boards (PCBs), connectors, interconnects, etc. have
become extremely important. The course will first introduce the basic elements
of any electrical model or circuit such as resistors, capacitors, and inductors.
Analyses in the frequency and time domain will be compared. Modeling of
structures such as packages or PCBs will be distinguished from the simulation
using tools such as SPICE. Modeling and simulation of distributed structures
such as cables or longer traces using distributed transmission lines will be
described. The effects of Phenomena such as ground bounce, reflections, signal
delay, and crosstalk will be analyzed. More advance topics such as driver and
load circuit models, EMC considerations and IBIS modeling and simulation will be
covered as time permits. It is expected that students will use SPICE extensively
to simulate electrical models. Where possible modeling tools based on
electromagnetic solvers (2D and 3D) will be used. The course is accompanied by a
lab where simple experimentsto illustrate the above concepts will be done.

Pre-requisite: Graduate Standing or Consent of Instructor

Enrollment Info: For those not enrolled at SJSU, this course may be taken
through SJSU's Open University. The cost is approximately $500 + cost of
instructional materials. For early enrollment please contact the SJSU Continuing
Education Office at (408) 924-2670. Enrollment during the first class period
will be facilitated.
