There is quite indeed a right way to make high speed measurements. If done
wrong, you will see a lot of reflections and noise. Most high impedance probes
rely on the ground return pin to be electrically short. When I use a TDR I
prefer to solder my 50 ohm cable directly to the trace and gnd adjacent, and
the 50 ohm input impedance selected. There have been many references on proper
high speed measurement techniques starting with the 1970's classic E&H's "High
speed measurement techniques" to current day "High Frequency Measurements and
Noise in Electronic Circuits" by Douglas Smith (1993)
