I have eliminated the thermals (spokes) on all designs
I have consulted on or designed. For non-leaded
through holes they are simply not needed. Not only do
you get better SI but lower EMI. Anyone telling you
that thermals are required (for non-leaded through
holes) is simply behind the times.
