Welcome one and All!  This is a "Proto-Site".  We are still in the experimental stage.  Please excuse the clutter during this formative time!

Thanks for stopping by!
This site is just starting up and should have more content every few days.  I hope to catch you on the air or get some email from you!

Web Extra is a members-only site at www.arrl.org.

This site is intended to be a gateway to understanding Amateur Radio (Ham radio) and all manner of scientific endeavor.  We intend to have a good amount of articles on Amateur Radio, Electronics, Astronomy and Weather that will help you to learn things that you never did before you found this site.
Unfortunately, a tradition has developed for newcomers to amateur radio to just jump right in, and those who have the tenacity eventually get licensed. We aim to provide you with all the hand-holding you may need to avoid this type of baptism by fire.
I am starting a "Basics" section for those who know little or nothing about electronics and are looking for a place to start.  Use the link above or just click to the next page to see what I have for you now.  Remember, this site is just starting and things will be a little more organized in the very near future but GOOD THINGS ARE COMING!

                               A Few Test Links

Below is a list of a few basic links about ham radio:

        ARRL Web site

        Buckmaster Call Letter Lookup

        QRZ Call Letter Lookup

        YAHOO's Ham Call Lookup Links

There is now a basic review of the most common Amateur Radio magazines here in the US on the site now for newcomers to the hobby.  Read this before you buy your first Ham Radio mag or don't want to be reminded that you can't stand around reading a magazine for long without buying it!
I have been a licensed ham since 1971 and in 1998 I had the honor of becoming one of the  ARRL Lab staff and worked out of HQ employed as the ARRL's full time Technical Information Service Coordinator in charge of the ARRL Technical Information Service. You can find me listed under "Laboratory Staff" in the September through December, 1998 QSTs. During this period, a portion of the answers in "The Doctor is IN" column were mine in origin. I am also signed to the January, 1999 QST review of the Icom IC-2100H two-meter transceiver.

The keyer and key on the cover of the current 1999 Radio Amateur's Handbook are mine. Look for a photo of these here soon, and perhaps a few pictures of the gang at ARRL HQ!
I hold and Amateur Extra class license, a commercial General Radiotelephone Operator's License (GROL) with radar endorsement (formerly called a First Class Radiotelephone Operator's License) and I am an Associate Certified Electronics Technician.  I learned electronics as a teenager at a time when High Schools didn't teach electronics.  Feel free to email any questions or concerns you have about ham radio or electronics.  If I don't know the answer I can at least direct you to where your answer will be found.

For newcomers and old-timers alike, I am available for any direction you need to navigate your way through the
ARRL, such as recommending the right person at HQ to take care of your concern.  I know that the ARRL, just
like Amateur Radio and Electronics itself can often be a bit bewildering.  -George Beloin, WA1PIX
