16:51 PST Tuesday, December 23
There was an update today from the U.S.G.S. in Menlo Park, indicating that surface rupture was found
on the Oceanic fault. This makes it the probably culprit for the Mw6.5. Aftershocks continue.
The largest so far is still the Mw4.7 that happened 11 minutes after the mainshock.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

13:36 PST Monday, December 22
Late this morning (11:15 and 56 seconds), Central California experienced a Mw 6.5 earthquake.
The epicenter was located 7 miles northeast of San Simeon. This is within the Northern California
Seismic Network, operated by the U.S. Geological Survey out of Menlo Park. Our colleagues there
report that the aftershocks are indicating a unilateral fault rupture to the southeast, with a fault
length of possibly up to 15 or 20 miles. The Oceanic fault (which is actually on land, not offshore)
is at the moment considered a likely culprit. It is one of a series of thrust faults located between
strike-slip faults, themselves parallel to the San Andreas fault, which is about 35 miles to the northeast.
Today's earthquake was clearly felt as far away as the Bay area and Orange County, with a few reports
from south of Oceanside. The town of Lockwood reported intensity Modified Mercalli VIII.
Paso Robles & Shandon have reported intensity VII. These levels of shaking can easily cause damage
to older structures. It is reported that two deaths occured as a result of a collapsed Clock Tower in Paso Robles.

Many feelable aftershocks are to be expected. The U.S.G.S. aftershock warning indicates a 90% chance
of a M5.0 or larger aftershock within the next week. The chances of a bigger quake are, of course, much smaller.
The usual chance that any quake in California is a foreshock is 5% or 1 out of 20. Since it has been
nearly three hours since the mainshock & no larger quake has happened, this risk is probably now down
in the 2 to 3% level.

Also of possibly some interest was a ML4.1 earthquake on Saturday, in the remote mountains 24 miles east of Big Pine,
in the northern Owens Valley. The time was 8:35 am on Saturday. It was reported lightly felt in Bishop, Big Pine,

This quake was felt throughout the Inland Empire with a peak intensity of Modified Mercalli IV.
It was preceded by a M1.8 & a M2.6 foreshock, the latter of which was initially reported as another M3.3.
This error was due to the two quakes being only 19 seconds apart in time, causing the magnitude software to
include some waves from the second quake into its calculations for the first.

The Seismic Network staff were very happy to learn yesterday that many (not all) of the recording stations
we thought were lost to the fires are actually okay, just without power!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thousand Oaks & nearby communities. The peak intensity was Modified Mercally III.

A M4.2 quake along the Landers rupture zone was fairly widely felt last night. The time
was 11:15 am & the epicenter was located 20 miles northeast of Lucerne Valley. The focal
mechanism is strike-slip. Because we can still see (after more than 10 years) the Landers
aftershock zone outlined in earthquakes on the seismicity maps, that means the aftershocks
are still going on & last night's quake is a Landers aftershock. Felt reports have come in
from the Big Bear, Lucerne Valley, Victorville, Barstow & Phelan areas so far.

A small quake (M2.6) was widely felt by many in Pasadena, including most people at the
Seismological Lab, this afternoon at 1:26 pm. The epicenter was located 2 miles northeast
of Caltech or 2 milse north of San Marino. We have received a considerable number of
"felt reports" from Pasadena, Altadens & surrounding communities.
Interestingly, there was a M2.0 foreshock at 1:09 pm (at the same location).
We got only about four felt reports for that one.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

16:32 PDT Tuesday, June 17
We revised the magnitude on the first of the Lytle Creek quakes down to M3.1. Since the two quakes
happened so close together in time, the amplitudes are intermixed & it took a little bit of inspection
to separate them. The focal mechanism, at least for the first quake, is strike-slip.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

14:00 PDT Tuesday, June 17
Two small quakes were felt early this afternoon in the Lytle Creek area. They were: a M3.3 at 1:25:05 pm & a M3.4

08:32 PDT Saturday, May 24
The Brawley swarm continued overnight at a somewhat reduced rate. Nothing that would
be noticed by the public has occurred since about midnight. We have had a slight revision
in magnitudes: M3.5 at 4:53 pm, M3.1 at 5:20 pm, M4.2 at 7:04 pm & M3.5 at 11:51 pm.
We are aware of a software bug that causes the real-time system, which is responsible
for the initial estimates, to underestimate the magnitudes in some geographic areas.
We are currently testing a new version off-line which should fix this problem.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

19:30 PDT Friday, May 23
It looks like the "tiny" Brawley swarm mentioned in the last entry is not so small any more.
So far this evening, there have been: a M3.5 at 4:53 pm, a M3.0 at 5:20 pm & a M4.0
at 7:04 pm, plus a few dozen smaller quakes. "Felt reports" have come in from Brawley,
El Centro & even the Yuma AZ area. The M4.0 was reported at Modified Mercalli
intensity V in the Brawley area (see the "Did You Feel It?" link above), which means
items were knocked off shelves & so forth. The typical Imperial Valley swarm could go
on for two to three days. Some historical swarms have included quakes in the M5 range
(for example, the Westmorland sequence in April of 1981), but most swarms do not include
quakes of this size.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

15:26 PDT Friday, May 23
We've just had two more small "felt" quakes: a M2.6 at 2:43 pm & a M2.8 at 2:55 pm.
They are the largest of another tiny swarm, located 2 miles southwest of Brawley,
in the Imperial Valley. Both these quakes were felt in Brawley.

A small quake (M2.5) was fairly widely felt in the San Gabriel Valley this morning, at 8:53 am.
The epicenter was located 1 mile north-northwest of San Gabriel, not too far from
the Raymond Hill fault. The focal mechanism is strike-slip & consistent with that fault.
So far, we have reports that it was felt in Pasadena (including the Seismological Lab),
South Pasadena, Temple City, Monterey Park & nearby areas of Los Angeles.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

09:39 PDT Monday, May 19
There were several small earthquakes of interst over the weekend:
Late Friday afternoon, at 5:35 pm, a M2.9 quake was felt in Frazier Park & Lebec.
The epicenter was located 2 miles south-southeast of Frazier Park, not too far from
the San Andreas fault.

Later, at 12:18 am, there was a M2.7 Hector Mines aftershock, which took place 25 miles
north of Joshua Tree. It was, as far as we know, not felt, probably due to its remote location.

At 4:27 am (also on Saturday), a M3.1 quake occurred in the often active Brawley Seismic zone,
in the Imperial Valley. This quake was centered 2 miles east-northeast of Obsidian Butte.
We have a single report of its being felt in Calipatria.

Also, there was a pair of M2.7 quakes late Sunday night, 6 miles southwest of Ojai.
They occurred at 8:05 pm & 8:13 pm. Both were felt in Ojai & Ventura.

Finally, there was a M2.9 Landers aftershock, at 11:19 pm on Sunday, located 26 miles
east-northeast of Lucerne Valley. We have no "felt reports" on this quake, again due to
the remote location of the epicenter.

San Andreas fault. The focal mechanism is strike-slip, consistent with the more or less
east-west striking faults in that area of the Little San Bernardino Mtns.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

08:05 PDT Monday, May 12
At 5:35 pm on Friday, there was a M2.9 Hector Mines quake, located 8 miles northwest of Ludlow.

on Thursday, at 4:03 pm, which was felt in the Big Bear area.

Over the weekend, a small swarm occurred 2 miles east-northeast of Obsidian Butte in the northern
Imperial Valley. The largest member of the swarm was a M3.3 at 9:39 am on Sunday. We don't have
only one "felt report" (Niland), but the several members of the swarm were large enough to feel in
towns like Calipatria, Westmorland, as well.

The most widely felt of the weekend's activity was a M3.1 early this morning (3:09 am) 1 mile north of
Compton. It was felt pretty much throughout the Los Angeles Basin, with a peak intensity of Modified

--------------------------------------------------------------

10:38 PST Wednesday, March 05
We had a M3.0 Hector Mines quake at 8:05 am this morning. It was located 8 miles west
of Ludlow & should have been felt there. Hector Mines aftershocks are getting pretty rare.
However, if you look at the map regularly, you can still see the sequence, so the aftershocks aren't over.

---------------------------------------------------------------

07:59 PST Monday, March 03
We've had a little bit more activity in the Imperial Valley over the weekend,
the largest being a M3.2 at 1:57 am this morning, located 4 miles east-northeast

We have recorded and located 657 earthquakes in the last week.
Click here to see a summary and a map.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

07:34 PST Thursday, February 27
The latest Big Bear aftershock was a M4.0 overnight, at 9:00 pm last night, at the
same location as the rest, 3 miles north-northeast of Big Bear City. You may not be
able to see it in the "Recent Earthquakes" map, but the aftershock locations are
lining up on a north-northwest to south-southeast direction (called "strike" in geology
terms). This line-up is part of the evidence that leads us to tentatively assign the
sequence to the Helendale fault, which has the same strike. Last night's quake was
on the south-southeasternly end. It was widely felt in the Inland Empire.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

09:33 PST Wednesday, February 26
Another Big Bear area aftershock was felt at 5:45 pm yesterday. It had a magnitude
of M3.6 & was located 5 miles north of Big Bear City.

Palmdale & Lancaster. There have also been 7 more M3+ aftershocks since the
M4.5 at 11:33 am on Saturday.

In addition, there was a M3.2 near Borrego Springs at 3:06 pm yesterday.
The epicenter was 14 miles north-northwest of Borrego Springs.
It was felt in the Anza area.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

13:06 PST Saturday, February 22
Here is a short summary of the aftershock sequence so far: in addition to the ML5.4,
there have been five quakes larger than M4 & eight additional ones larger than M3.
The largest aftershock is a M4.5 at 11:35 am today, in the same area 3 miles north of Big Bear City.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

07:46 PST Saturday, February 22
Analysis of this morning's ML5.4 earthquake indicate a strike-slip focal mechanism,
with a strike consistent with the nearby Helendale fault. We cannot say for certain
that the quake was on that fault unless there is surface rupture observed, but the
evidence seems consistent.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

05:18 PST Saturday, February 22
At 4:19 am this morning, a M5.4 quake in the San Bernardino Mtns. was widely
felt in the Inland Empire & greater Los Angeles. The peak intensity reported is
Modified Mercalli V. So far, there have been 9 aftershocks of M3.0 or larger,
the largest of which was a M4.5 at 4:20 am. All were centered 3 miles north of Big Bear City.

People in the South Bay towns of Manhattan Beach & El Segundo reported a very
small quake yesterday evening. It was, in fact, a M2.3 located just offshore 3 miles
west of Manhattan Beach. The time was 7:33 pm.

It was felt in Imperial Valley, San Diego & points in between such as Pine Valley, Jamul, etc. The peak intensity was Modified Mercalli IV, reported in El Centro. No doubt it was felt in Mexico as well, but we only get reports from within the U.S. Note that these quakes (the M5.0 & its two aftershocks) are slightly too far south to show on the "Recent Earthquakes" map. ======================================================================================= 17:00 PST Thursday, February 06 We have recorded and located 258 earthquakes in the last week. The plot thickens since the first earthquake M3.0 or greater for the year was a M3.0 on New Years Day at 1:02 pm in the same location as the twins. There were no reports of this earthquake being felt. ==========================================================================
