Field Day, in Ham Radio parlance, refers to a one day (24 hour) contest between clubs and individuals sponsored by the ARRL, the American Radio Relay League, which is the national organization that represents the interests of Amateur Radio.
Because the object of the contest is to make as many contacts as possible on as
many bands as possible during the 24 hour event and to do it under difficult conditions, a handicap is given to stations who work on battery or solar power. Multiple transmitters are allowed but the number of transmitters determine which competition category one is in.On the last full weekend of June each year, EBARC holds their Field
Day event at Cesar E. Chavez Park at the foot of University Avenue in Berkeley
California. We set up our tents, transmitters and antennas and settle
down to a weekend of contesting, conversation with other club members and
good food. Our designation for the contest is "2A EB", which means
that we have two HF transmitters on the air at the same time, we are
running with emergency generator power and we are from the East Bay section
of the Pacific Division of the ARRL. For the Field Day contest we
use our club call sign: W6CUS or "Whiskey Six Charlie Uniform Sierra."
If you are not otherwise busy on the last weekend of June, come and visit
us or some other ham club in your area. It's a great time and you
can actually get on the air if you wish.
