ADDITIONAL DATA NEEDED FOR TEXT ALERTS

I rec'd email from Hal helms WA4QLA, he needs more data to set up text alerts.

"Hi John,

Please update your post on the DARK web page. In order to manage the alerts I need more than what people are sending me. It isn’t enough to have someone send me an email saying, “this is John Doe and my cell number is ###-###-####”. I need to know five things to construct a manageable contact list - Name, amateur radio call if any, organization (GCARERS, CERT, or Sherif’s Volunteer), cell number and cell phone carrier. Then I can construct a database to get the right alerts to each subscriber, and years down the road when they want change I can find the right record. "

ARES Information / from Gilchrist EC for TEXT ALERTS DATABASE

Hal (WA4QLA) contacted me and needs more information to set up database for text alerts he says :

" I need more than what people are sending me. It isn’t enough to have someone send me an email saying, “this is John Doe and my cell number is ###-###-####”. I need to know five things to construct a manageable contact list - Name, amateur radio call if any, organization (Gilchrist Co. ARES, CERT, or Sheriff’s Volunteer), cell number and cell phone carrier. "

Let's see if we can help him out so he can help us all when more immediate storm threats come knockin'. Live Oak just got hit again this week with tornado ! Even my email list does not always pair with actual names and call signs. If your call sign is part of your email it is easy to put name to email. I can try to dig through old CERT record and other rosters to fill in some other gaps.

Weather Alert sites, from ARES EC Gilchrist Co. for ARES and CERT Volunteers

Hello All,

To get automatic weather alerts sent to your e mail or by text alert to your phone. A straight search shows many sites that will send out weather alerts.

The NWS lists many sites as well.

https://www.weather.gov/enterprise/sw-alerts-email-1a

WA4QLA Hal was able to sign up directly with NWS for priority alerts (that site not for general public, but emergency managers and the like). He sends alerts to me and I e mail out to the group.

I found a way to type a text message on my laptop and send out as text to cell recipients. This would be a way to contact you with an alert that is fast moving threat such as tornado event. I would need your cell phone # to accomplish this type alert. After an initial text test message, any further texts you receive will be a real alert prompted by an emergency event.

ARES Information / from acting Gilchrist EC

Altho I still wish to step down from EC position this year, I will continue as acting EC until someone steps up to fill the position. I'd like to see someone fill the EC position before the next hurricane season starts.
I expect to be traveling around the country by early summer and need the time off.
Anyone with General license or better is qualified to begin as EC and can pick up EC 001 communications course when able.
Alachua ARES group very helpful for this.

November Meeting

My friends the November meeting will probably be the most important meeting we have had.  We will be making the decision as to whether to desolve or continue.  We will not be solvent in the very near future.  To stop the bleeding, I have made the decision to terminate the liability insurance as we have not had an event in the past three years.

We are on the cusp and I have started the move to inventory all equipment so that it can be listed for sale (sealed bid) to members.  A new roster has been posted using the receipt book.  I went back to January 2018 to make sure that I didn’t miss anyone.  If you are not on the roster please bring your receipt or membership card and I’ll correct the roster. Our bylaws state that all assets of the club shall be sold and the funds divided among current members.  If the members are not interested in the assets, they shall be listed for sale else where.

If the decision is made to desolve the club and elect to keep the repeaters on the air rather than selling the equipment, I’ll will keep them up as log as I am able to.

Respectfully submitted,
Mike Sherrill, President D.A.R.K.
