According to the ARRL the very first things an amateur should do are:
  1. Check that you and your FAMILY are safe and secure before you respond to an emergency
  2. Provide your family with the means to contact you and other members of the family - other contacts should be out of town family or friends.
  3. Check that your property is safe and secure before you respond to an emergency.
  4. Monitor your call up frequency
  5. Follow the instructions that you receive from the officials in charge.
  6. Contact you local coordinators, or their designee, for further instructions

In addition, your initial Family preparedness activities might include the actions recommended in the American Red Cross - Weekend Preparedness Guide some of the information is summarized below.

  • Build a kit (takes about 45 minutes)
