Franz Josef Land is an archipelago located in far north Russia in the Arctic Ocean east of Svalbard Island.  At latitude 80 to 82 degrees north, it forms the most northerly group of islands in Asia.  The archipelago is 550 miles from the North Pole and consists of 191, mostly uninhabited, ice-covered islands.
