We're Back in Business!

OFFICIAL

Updated 20 August 2000. A heart-felt thanks to everyone who replied or wrote regarding the potential loss of the Naval Academy amateur radio club and MARS station. The short "7-Day War" has drawn support from the ARRL, over 100 hams from across the US, numerous amateurs and military personnel overseas (especially from RNARS), and many clubs, including other colleges and service academies. We are grateful to the USNA administration for being attentive and open-minded, and for issuing us a reprieve til January 2001, where we will be re-evaluated for participation, membership, and compliance with all applicable regulations (we're under the microscope.)

A special thanks also to Bob Bruninga WB4APR who has been a steadfast faculty supporter of the club for many years, and his director, LT Colonel Billy Smith, USAF, who stepped up to provide us the representation we needed to refute the dismissal. While battles such as these are being fought across the globe, and sadly sometimes lost, it has been demonstrated that we can make progress in "peace-time" when the perception of our usefulness is least, rather than the easy ground we gain during our moments of popularity when communications crises arise.

I spoke at the recent Anne Arundel, MD Radio Club meeting about "keeping our guard up." It's not so much a need for defensive posture as it is keeping the promotion going: every contact you make (be they a ham or not), every Radio Shack sales associate you educate, every youth you put a radio in the hand of and say, "Hey, try this."

If ham radio is in danger, it is imperiled by our own shortcoming. If this were easy, I wouldn't enjoy the satisfaction of doing it. I have 3 rules:
Always answer a CQ.
Talk to one person daily about ham radio.
Do one new thing with your radios each week.

Thanks to all of the following who quickly responded with support!
