How to Set up an RF Link

We can always use more RF links on EchoLink. If you would like to set up an RF link here are some pointers that will help you get started and run a good RF node that will bring you enjoyment and provide a good service to your community.

1. Software: I recommend rtpDir which is the software in the image above. This is better than the standard EchoLink software as it offers many features such as allowing additional sysops acess to your system, multiple connections not only from Echolink but IRLP, Asterisk, and D-Star, the ability to mute and deaf a station that is violating the rules or is staying keyed down etc. It sends a message in the text box to new connections. It allows you to run in conference mode (either as link and conference server or as a conference server such as *KC4QLP*. It also has DTMF muting which is important as you'll see in a while.

2. Radio: It is important to use a radio that can withstand continuous service as your link will be busy especially if you will be running multiple connections. I use the IC-V8000 as it has a good receiver, good fan, and is not as expensive as my TS-2000 which I was using initially. I'm using a Rigblaster No-mic interface to connect to the radio and the transmission to the EchoLink system is thru Vox although if you have carrier detection, this is preferrable.

3. IDs, Courtesy Tones, and DTMF: If you will be linking to a repeater, it is important that you have CTCSS decoding turned on so that the only thing that gets passed thru the link is the transmitted audio from stations on the system. Repeater IDs and Courtesy tones should not pass through the link. Also, DTMF tones should not pass through the link. EchoLink has Auto-Mute in the sysop settings and rtpDir mutes them automatically.IDs and tones just cause all the links to be tied up unnecessarily.

These tips should help you run a good RF link. Feel free to connect to W1MWB-L #195040 when you're setup. 73
