Winter on Martha's
Vineyard
Martha's Vineyard Island consists of six
towns the three largest "down-island"towns are Edgartown, Oak Bluffs
and Tisbury with the port town of Vineyard Haven being part of
Tisbury. The three smaller "up -island towns are Chilmark with its
small fishing village of Menemsha , Gay Head which is mostly owned by
American Indians and West Tisbury. Most of the population which goes
from approxmatly 10,000 in the winter to over 50,000 in the summer
resides in the down-island towns. The island was once home to a large
fishing fleet that fished the world for whales in the 1800's. Tourism
in now the main industry on the island in the summer months.
