Minutes of Meriden Amateur Radio Club
Outgoing President Bill W1KKF opened the evening activities on December
12, 2008. About 30-35 members and guests were present to enjoy the MARC
Annual Christmas Party. Mike KB1MEK and Bob KB1FYL rendered a musical
interlude preceding and following the evening activities.December 2008 A steering committee decided this year to allow the Ladies Guild of the First United Methodist Church to cater the event. All agreed the repast was professionally done and delicious. Recognition and a round of applause was rendered. Following the banquet, the business meeting began. The normal agenda was dispensed with. After a round of introductions, the assembled remembered Frank Darmofalski W1FD (SK) with many recalling their pleasant memories about our founding president. The 2009 MARC officers were introduced: John N1GNV President Jim N1ZN Vice President Dan W1DMM Secretary Haggie KB1HCC Treasurer Rich WA1TRY Station Activity Manager Awards recognize a variety of deeds of the past year. This year we were not without our share. John N1GNV took the floor to moderate the award presentations. • John recognized the quarter century of Bill W1KKF leading the Meriden Amateur Radio Club with a presentation of an engraved pocket knife from the new president and, from the membership, a plaque and life membership in MARC noting Bill’s outstanding tenure. Very Well Done! Bill. • Paul K1SEZ earned the MARC Marathon Challenge First Place – High Power award with worked all continents endorsement. (horse’s derriere) Award. Because the blunders were not observed – or were so universal – that the H.A. Award was not awarded and will remain in the stable. • Rich WA1TRY was the recipient of the Technical Achievement Award for his poweress in “properly” using the volume control on his two meter rig Bill W1KKF made the nights highlight awards to the Ham of the Year and Elmer of the Year. These awards are voted on by the membership and represent the top praise of MARC members. • Elmer of the Year – Frank Darmofalski W1FD • Ham of the Year – Bill Wawrzeniak W1KKF Before we closed, John N1GNV announced the challenge of a scholarship match by QuickSilver Radio was met and $244 ($122 in attendee donations and a $122 match) contributed to the Scholarship fund. The business meeting opened at 1930 on November 13, 2008 with approximately 30 people in attendance. A quorum was present. November 2008 Announcements - • Frank Darmofalski W1FD became a Silent Key on November 2, 2008. A remembrance period will take place at the Christmas Party on December 12th. • Bill Munger N1PBF, a former member, became a Silent Key in October. • Introductions. • Next meeting is on Friday, December 12th at 7:00 PM - Christmas Party • Note date is Friday • Family of W1FD has offered Frank’s call to MARC as vanity call or to interested MARC member. Will be KK article and discussion/decision in January. Secretary's Report - • Accepted as presented and published. Correction: 2008 is the 75th anniversary of Sweeps Stakes, not the 50th. Treasurer's Report - • Accepted as presented. • Impact of economy on the Mutual Fund will be detailed at the January meeting. • Annual audit committee: N1GNV, K1SEZ and N1ZN. Contributions – • Club – K1PU donated headsets for club station from McKay Products. • Club – Several items of test equipment was donated by Ian W1YVC. • Scholarship - The Darmofalski family suggested that friends may donate to the scholarship fund in Frank’s name Correspondence – • Sympathy cards sent to the families of Frank Darmofalski W1FD and Bill Munger N1PBF. • Floral arrangement sent to services for Frank Darmofalski W1FD. • Miscellaneous catalogs. Scholarship – (KE1AY) • Letters for 2009 scholarship announcement will go to schools in March. Club Station & Facilities - (WA1TRY) • Station worked OK for SS-CW • A bad connector in the antenna panel to be repaired before SS-SSB. • Ten-Tec tuner squeaks. Club Activities & Program (KB1CIW) • Next activity meeting is January 22, 2009. Bob needs suggestions and collaborators. • Sweep Stakes-SSB November 15th & 16th. See Skip W1SKP or KB1CIW to sign-up. • Sweep Stakes-CW was November 1st & 2nd. Missed a sweep by one – NT. • Next regular activity meeting is Thursday January 24th. • Bob KB1FYL will hold an instructional and construction series on building a quality telescope on non-meeting Thursdays (about 4-2 hour sessions) in March. Interference and Technical - (WA1TRY) • Noticed some 40-meter interference during SS. Instruction - (VE-KE1AY, Instruction-Open) • No VE session scheduled • January one-day Tech class by N1GNV on hold. Nutmeg Hamfest - (W1KKF) October 12, 2008 • Nutfest unedited results: Attendance-521, MARC distribution $***.** (est), VE session $**.00, Club table $***.00. • IC718 and Switching power supply did not sell, they will be offered on EBay. Candy Store - (N1ZN) • Running smoothly. • MARC logo hats are available – See Jim N1ZN Key Klix - (WA1MVJ & staff) • Always need articles and authors. • Motion by N1GNV second by W1POP to purchase a new printer for WA1TRY replacing one worn out on KeyKlix printing. Not to exceed $50.00. Passed. EmComm - (WA1VXH) • There may be a nationwide ID system. More to follow. • Wallingford announced “no communications CERT program. May put amateur-town relationship in jeopardy. • Discussion on SET participation during October. Miscellaneous • Motion by N1KGP second by W1SKP to fund annual awards upto $100. Passed • Chris WA1VXH will request Marcus Cooke Park for Field Day 2009 in January. • W1SKP said that the Church Ladies would cater the Christmas Party for $550. Subcommittee will decide Annual Meeting - • The November business meeting is the Annual Meeting per our bylaws. K1VDF took the floor as teller. The current officer slate has agreed to run again. Nominations from the floor were: John N1GNV-President, Paul K1SEZ-Secretary, and Haggy KB1HCC-Treasurer. A secret ballot was initiated for President and Secretary. After determining that John N1GNV had won the Presidency and Dan W1DMM had won as Secretary, John N1GNV declined his nomination for Treasurer. The president called a Special Meeting preceding the regular activity
meeting at 19:30 PM on September 25, 2008. The purpose was to handle
two agenda items: 1) Deal with the auction of donated items to MARC by
Charles Cooper WY3S and his family, and 2) Consider two applicants for
membership. Approximately 16 were in attendance.Special Meeting September 2008 • Some sealed bids were received before the meeting; additional bids were taken from the assemblage. Reconvening at 8:02 PM after a 15 minute suspension to allow viewing of the equipment, the bids were opened. Only bids meeting the minimum criteria set by the Executive Committee were considered. The following items were sold: Alinco DJ-160 HT – KB1GWP, Antenna Analyzer MFJ-259 – N1ZN, Soldering Iron – KB1CIW, Heath SB-104 XCVR – N1ZN, and several miscellaneous items sold at best offer. The remaining items will be on the MARC table at the Nutmeg Hamfest. • Motion by N1GNV second by several to accept new members Bob Munro W1AMF of North Haven and Paul Clark WA1MAC of Hamden. FB Todd. • We need a new license training class coordinator. Secretary's Report - • Accepted as published, with two exceptions 1. Betsey donated a Repeater Directory, and 2. The MARC reflector was discussed and will leave as is. Treasurer's Report - • No report Contributions – • MARC – Ham radio equipment from Charles Cooper WY3S. Equipment will be offered to members first through an auction and the remainder offered at the club table at the Nutfest. The business meeting was open at 1934 on July 10, 2008 with approximately 19 people in attendance. A quorum was present. July 2008 General – • The meeting opened with an introduction by Don KE1AY of the 2008 MARC Scholarship Award. Allison Maurer and her parents, Bob and Maureen, were warmly received. A graduate of Maloney High School, Allison will be attending Hofstra University on Long Island and major in TV and Communications. • The regular portion of the business meeting continued with introductions. • Next meeting is on Thursday, July 27th. - an activity meeting. • Looking for a coordinator/facilitator for licensing classes. • Skip W1SKP was reported home after a trip to the hospital with a TIA or similar symptoms. Secretary's Report - • Minutes for June 2008 accepted as presented and published. Treasurer's Report - • Accepted as presented. Field Day - (W1SKP) – June 28 & 29th • The site worked out well and all involved seemed pleased. • New antenna arrangements went well. • WX was near perfect, the first rain was observed about 3:30 PM Sunday. • Overall, all agreed that it was a good Field Day. • An enthusiastic discussion over the Field Day message and if it was properly transmitted, thereby claiming it for bonus points, ensued. Report & Minutes of January 2008 The business meeting was opened at 1930 on January 8, 2008 with approximately 15 people in attendance. A quorum was present. Announcements - • The president has asked that most reports be delivered via Key Klix to reduce the boring parts of the meeting. The business meeting will hopefully conclude with a mini technical session. • Next meeting is on Thursday, Jan 22 at 7:30 PM - An activity meeting Secretary's Report - • Accepted as published for both November and December. (Correction: K1SKP and KB1KGP should read W1SKP and N1KGP, respectively). • To comply with the new administration request, this document will include the meeting minutes and other reportable items, such as net status, to comply with our various rules and desires.
