Minutes of Meriden Amateur Radio Club
December 2004

The meeting was opened by Pres. Bill W1KKF on December 9, 2004 at 7:15 PM.

 After a round of introductions, the 30 to 35 members and their guests enjoyed a culinary banquet put on by our own chefs Dave K1WJL, John K1VDF and their able staff. Arrays of fine desserts were provided by many of the attendees.

 Following the satisfying feast, the business meeting began. Bill recognized our guest: Betsey Doane K1EIC Connecticut Section Manager. Betsey thanked the membership for their invitation and recognized MARC for its contributions to Amateur Radio especially in providing the State Convention in conjunction with the Nutmeg Hamfest and the active role taken by many members. She conclude her remarks with a Happy Holiday wish for all and a hope that all can look forward to a good new year. A Certificate of Appreciation was presented to Betsey by MARC for her efforts as Section Manager and her long standing friendship with MARC.

Bob KB1CIW announced the successful completion of the WRA Repeater Scavenger Hunt. The hunt was to encourage friendliness and dialog on the repeater. There were about 18 participants chasing the 22 hunt items. Dan W1DMM was awarded a first place certificate.

Competition is usually intense for the renowned H.A. (horse’s derriere) Award. John entertained us with verbal thumbnails of the many candidates for the HA Award. Runners-up this year were

·         Steve KB1KEA was presented with the Bosox consolation award - next recipient is in 2090.

·         Dan W1DMM was recognized for not recognizing his Maritime abode of eight years.

·         Bob KB1CIW received a Special Technical Achievement Award - a defanged soldering iron.

·         FINALLY!! The coveted HA Award was presented to Bill W1KKF for going a whole year without a major foul-up.

 Bill W1KKF made the nights highlight awards to the Ham of the Year and Elmer of the Year. These awards are voted by the membership and represent the top praise to MARC members.

 Our Holiday Party was serenaded this year by our own world renowned group “Bob Cat and the Night Owl” (Bob KB1FYL & Todd K1TDO) with renditions from their CD album.

The evening closed with a 50/50 raffle and several door prizes donated by Bill KB1GZJ (case of wine) and Quick Silver Radio (head phones, soldering iron and noise suppresser).

Key Klix - (WA1MVJ & KB1FYL) 
  • July issue excellent spread with color layout.
  • Ed was very surprised at the cost for a color spread. Motion by KE1AY Second by N1YGL to repay Ed $238 for costs. Passed
  • Discussion on “normal” copying costs should be in $30 range. For special issues, pre- approval should be obtained. There were some offers for volunteer copy service for these specials
Field Day – June 25-27th
  • All agreed that it was an excellent Field Day and site
  • Bob W1HUG will assist Bill W1KKF on putting a Thank You Letter etc together
  • NB: Policing area is important. SMOKERS AND OTHER LITTERBUGS – PICK UP YOUR BUTTS AND OTHER DISCARDS!!!
  • Would like to see an increase in CW operators in the future. CW provides the greater multipliers. With a year of practice you to can join the elite in the CW tent.

Club/Contesting Activities -
  • May activity nigh featured field trip to Bethany Observatory lead by Bob to view and listen to Jupiter and any other emanations out there. Bob took us through the facility and showed his home brew 21 MHz Yagi to listen to the planets. We were also invited to sit in on the public session describing the night time sparklers of our universe.

  • Next meeting is on Thursday, May 27th. at 7:30 PM - an activity meeting will be a field trip to Bethany Observatory.
  • Frank W1FD and Bob WA1ZLF will take over as the MARC publicity honcho’s. Steve WV2LKM has run into personnel scheduling conflicts.

Club Station & Facilities - (N1API) 
  • Working on Club/Town equipment inventory. To be entered into database. PLEASE CHECK YOUR SHACKS for any borrowed equipment.
  • All borrowed equipment MUST be signed out with Al N1API (or designee).
  • Al will be purging inventory of old/unused/outdated equipment. Club members will have first bidding option, then to be offered at the Nutfest in October.
  • MFJ Antenna Analyzer seems to have a switch problem. Motion KB1FYL second by many to authorize N1API to contact MFJ about repair. If under $50, do it. Passed 
  • Motion by N1KGY second by N1API to purchase a 1000 foot coil of ‘parachute’ cord at $70.00 for field day and other outside activities Passed.
  • Chuck N1KGY is collecting orders for additional coils for member use. He needs an even increment of 1000 feet.
Club/Contesting Activities -
  • Bob KB1FYL will lead a field trip to Bethany Observatory to view and listen to Jupiter and any other emanations out there. We will be using Bob’s home brew 21 MHz Yagi to listen in. Bob believes a public open house is scheduled for the same night that will allow the use of the Observatories scopes.
  • The trip will leave the shack at 7:30 PM sharp.
  • April activity night featured Dan NY1F on NTS formatting and operation.

The business meeting was trampled open at 1940 on April 8, 2004 with approximately 23 people in attendance. A quorum was present. 

General - 

  • Introductions. 
  • Next meeting is on Thursday, April 22nd. at 7:30 PM - an activity meeting on NTS message handling
  • NEQP is coming up on May 1 & 2
  • Larry N1HEJ is running the Big E booth and looking for volunteers for half day stints.
  • Bob KE1AU is our official WAS and VUCC awards manager/checker for the ARRL. There have been some rule changes. Check with Bob for details.
  • Scholarship application forms have been distributed to area high schools. The expected award this year will be $200
Secretary's Report - Minutes for March 2004 accepted as presented and published. (March correction: Library display on Radio not Radio Astronomy)

  • Bob KB1CIW has a tentative Activity meeting schedule: April – NTS traffic handling, May – Bob KB1FYL on Radio Astronomy with possible field trip to Bethany Observatory, June - Field Day preparation, July- Fox Hunt (maybe). Aug – TBD, Sept – APRS /packet, Oct – Chuck’s N1KGY scheduled February presentation will be rescheduled.

The business meeting was gaveled open at 1942 on March 11, 2004 with approximately 31 people in attendance. A quorum was present. 

General - 

  • Introductions. 
  • A display on “Radio Astronomy” at the Wallingford Library for the month of March. Setting up a fine display was Bob KB1FYL, Joe KB1GWP, Jim N1ZN, and Bob KB1CIW.
  • Next meeting is on Thursday, March 25th. at 7:30 PM - an activity meeting. The activity is TBD
  • Michael KB1JEY ha taken new job in Penn Moving family in progres. We wish him well and hope to log him on-the-air.
  • Scholarship application forms will be distributed to area high schools. The are also available on the MARC web page.

  • DX cluster has been giving Al a major headache. Up and down. Now up. Seems some INI or DAAT files grew very large and must be rebuilt. Members may notice they have to sign on again the next time they connect.
  • Motion by K1VDF second by N1KGY to purchase shaack clock with WWV update capability not to exceed $35. Discussion followed. Bil KB1GZJ donated his clock. Motion withdrawn 
  • Motion by N1API second by ??? to spend up to $150 on station external communications speaker for shack. Motion defeated.

  • Luke KA1SE reported loud (S-7 to S-9) interference on 3922 +/- kHz in the area of Industrial Rd. Members are asked to assist in pin pointing he source.

Nutmeg Hamfest - (W1KKF) October 10, 2004
  • End of fiscal year for Alliance in February. Joel N1JEO as Treasurer of the Nutmeg Hamfest Alliance presented MARC with a $700 distribution check resulting from the 2003 Hamfest. 
  • Bill W1KKF, Joel N1JEO, and John N1GNV have been designated as directors to the Nutmeg Alliance from MARC.
