Minutes of Meriden Amateur Radio Club
December 2003
Pres. Bill W1KKF opened the meeting on December 11, 2003 at 7:20 PM.
The 55 to 60 members and their guests enjoyed a
culinary
banquet put on by our own chefs Bob KB1FYL, Dave K1WJL, John K1VDF and
their
able staff. Many of the attendees provided an array of fine desserts.
After the satisfying feast, the business meeting
began at 8:10 PM. After a
round of introductions, Bill
recognized our guest: Betsey Doane K1EIC, Connecticut ARRL Section
Manager.
Betsey thanked the membership for their invitation
and
recognized MARC for its contributions to Amateur Radio especially in
providing
the State Convention in conjunction with the Nutmeg Hamfest and the
very active
ARES role taken by many members. She conclude her remarks with a Happy
Holiday
wish for all and a hope that all can look forward to a good new year.

WA1JKR
for a donation of a 2 meter/70cm antenna and Bill Clarke KB1GZJ for a
donation
of a case of fine wine as door prizes.
Motion by John N1GNV and
second by many to accept into
membership Steve Sola KB1KWA of Meriden,
Bob Ross KB1KPL of Wallingford,
and Art Simmoneau KB1KPM of Hamden Motion passed. With their induction the
membership stands at 95 plus or minus.
With the official business
completed, Bill recognized to
Chuck N1KGY and pitched the gavel his way for the presentation of
awards. Chuck
explained the celebrated H.A. (horse’s caudal appendage) Award and entertained us with verbal thumbnails of the
many candidates for the HA Award throughout the evening.
Chuck explained the grouping of awards in three major
categories this year.
Certificates of appreciation were presented for
distinguished service during the year.

John Blevins K1VDF, and Rich Aubin WA1TRY (awarded with distinction).
Certificates of appreciation were presented for

service activities during the year.

Bob Crouthers KB1FYL, and Haggie Winslow KB1HCC.
Certificates of appreciation were presented for
field day
contributions above and beyond in June 2003.
- John Schinitis N1LEZ, John Blevins K1VDF, and Tim Mik WY1U.
Chuck also presented a Rookie of the Year award to
John
Condon KB1IXB.
Finally, the H.A. Award was bestowed on John N1GNV for his
misguided antenna hook ups.
Additionally, members presented special situation
awards;
- By K1CIW to Mike KB1FYG (Lighted award for winning the Fox
Hunt), Dan W1DMM (Half MARC history award), and Rich WA1TRY and AL
N1API
(Ten-Tec supporter awards).
- By N1GNV to Chuck N1KGY (Come Back Kid Award).
Bill W1KKF completed with
the nights highlight awards to the Ham of the Year and Elmer of
the
Year. These awards are voted by the membership and represent the top
accolades
to MARC members.

The evening closed with a 50/50 raffle and the several

November 2003
The business meeting
was flailed open at 1943 on November 13, 2003 with approximately 26
people in attendance. A quorum was present.
General -
- Introductions.
- Annual Holiday Party is December 11th at 7:00 PM at the VHF Hall
on Prince St. Entrance free with ppaod 2004 dues, guests welcome with
$5.00 fee to defray costs. Motion
made and second to approve upto $100 for Chuck N1KGY (Award MC) to

- Next meeting is on Thursday December 11th, the annual holiday
party and last business meeting of 2003.
- Next VE session is December 9th at 7:00 PM.

- New Tech class has started. Tuesdays October 14th until December
2nd.
- Next VE session on scheduled for Tues December 9th at 7 PM
Nutmeg Hamfest -
(W1KKF)
- The preliminary results indicate a positive return.
- The Alliance fiscal year ends in Feb 2004. The Board will
determine any distributions at that time.
- More than $400 was collected at the club table. A great job by
N1KGY and those that donated or consigned.
- Chairs, honchos, and volunteers recognized. N1KGY, N1GNV, W1KKF,
N1ZN, N1XXU, W1DMM, K1VDF, KB1JEY, WA1VXH, KB1FYL, KE1AY, and WA1TRY.
Candy Store -
(K1VDF) Store is open. Cups, hats, jackets and patches are available.

- First issue out under new management. Fantastic job Ed.
- Need for contributing authors and articles.
- Ed WA1MVJ needs all articles by fourth Thursday of month to meet
publication deadlines.

Club/Contesting
Activities
- Sweep Stakes - CW not a club event this year. SS- SSB see Chuck
N1KGY for signup times.
- Repair of FD food tent permanently tabled. Purchased two free
standing 13 X 13 picnic covers purchased with previously allocated
($150.00) and presidential optioned $50.00. This will allow MARC to
continue Field Day food activities at Godek farm or other venues. Also
provide cover for other activities such as Special Events.
- The October Activity night was Mike Tracy KC1SX on “Reading &
Understanding Technical Reports in QST”
EmComm -
- Show & Tell / Special Event station at recent Blood Drive
brought welcome PR to MARC and EMComm group.
Annual Meeting -
- The November business meeting is the Annual Meeting per our
bylaws.

- The current officer slate has agreed to run again. Additional
nominations and closed – no additional nominations presented. Motion
that the Secretary cast one unanimous vote for the nominees, Passed.

meeting was gaveled open at 1930 on October 9, 2003 with approximately
27 people in attendance. A quorum was present.
General -
* Introductions.

been reported to be back in the hospital - YNH. Little information is
available, but a quick return home is expected.

officers, voting for Ham of the Year and Elmer of the Year, and special
fund (Scholarship) allocations.

A
work party – N1ZN, N1KGY, N1API, and WA1VXH - disassembled the beam and
parts
of the tower.

The
tower fastening hardware needs to be replaced with stainless steel
hardware.

Several
parts of the rotor and thrust bearing show signs of stress distortion.
·
The
HF beam has some 20 meter problems. Needs a bit of TLC
to clean the traps and replace the hardware (screws, nuts & bolts)
with non-corroding hardware. Motion by N1GNV second by N1ZN
rescinded and re
established
with more clarity to offer to members via the reflector BO over $50.00.
Passed.

The
town will replace the beam and rotor as part of their CP equipment.
·
The
Hi Power MFJ tuner is ill. It will be sent to MFJ for repair – the best
option
and price. Motion by N1API second by
KB1FYL to appropriate $75.00 for the tuner repairs. Motion passed.

still evaluating problems with HF amplifier.

new 60 meter channels have been set in the rig memories.

inductor. Bill W1KKF will evaluate.

Minutes of Meriden Amateur Radio
Club
June 2003
The business meeting was pounded open at 1936 on June 12, 2003 with
approximately 29 people in attendance. A quorum was present.
General -
- The first Frank Darmofalski W1FD Scholarship Award was presented
to Royal Allard of Meriden. The 2003 class valedictorian of Wilcox
Technical High School and a member of the National Honor Society. He
was selected to participate in the Tech-Prep program allowing students
to accumulate college credits for advanced honors courses. Royal
amassed 14 credits towards his college degree. He will matriculate as
an Electrical Engineering candidate at the Waterbury Branch of UConn
this fall. Royal is also a member of the Student Council and
holds two outside jobs in addition to his school efforts. The
presentation was made by Frank, MARC President Bill W1KKF, and
Scholarship Chairman Don KE1AY.
- Introductions.
- Next meeting is on Thursday, June 26th at 7:30 PM - an activity
meeting. The activity will be Field Day preparations.
- NE Division meeting is in New Hampshire July 13. Anyone wishing
to go and represent club see Bill W1KKF.

The business meeting was pounded open at 1940 on April 10, 2003 with
approximately 33 people in attendance. A quorum was present.
General -
- Introductions.
- Al Aalvareztorres AA1DO SK. Al passed away suddenly was a very
active member of MARC. Holder of many officer positions in MARC, Al was
also the recipient of the Ham of the Year and Elmer of the Year.
- A memorial service will be held in honor of Al AA1DO at the MARC
Headquarters at 7:30 PM on Thursday, April 17th.
- Next meeting is on Thursday, April 24th at 7:30 PM - an activity
meeting. The activity is a mini flea market and home-brew demo.
- The May activity meeting will include a short talk (15
min) by the Wallingford Director of Health on Emergency Health Issues.
- A reminder that the meetings start at 7:30 PM. Please gauge your
arrival so the meeting can start on time.

approximately 35 people in attendance. A quorum was present.
General -
- Introductions.

activity meeting. (Construction of a 2 meter J-Pole).
- MARC recognized Frank W1FD with a congratulations cake for his
70 years as an active Amateur. Frank talked about some of his early
memories taking several questions from the floor - “Exams were a lot
harder back then” and his outlook for the future of ARS, “Keep it
wireless”. His first license precedes the FCC itself by a year - it was
formally the FRC. [The Federal Radio Commission was created as a result
of the passage of the Radio Act
of 1927 (PL 632, 69th Congress, 2nd) approved February 23, 1927 and
signed by President Coolidge on February 23. The Act was created to
bring order
to the chaotic situation that developed as a result of the breakdown of
earlier wireless acts passed during the formative years of wireless
radio communication.]
