Minutes of Meriden Amateur Radio Club
December 2002

The meeting was opened by Pres. Bill W1KKF on December 12, 2002 at 7:45 PM.

After a round of introductions, the 45 to 50 members and their guests enjoyed a culinary  banquet put on by our own chefs Bob KB1FYL, Dave K1WJL, John K1VDF and their able staff. An array of fine desserts were provided by many of the attendees.

After the satisfying feast, the business meeting began at 8:15 PM. Bill recognized our guest: Ernie Director of the Wallingfor Civil Preparedness organization  The 2003 MARC officers were introduced:

A round of applause for the kitchen crew; Dave K1WJL, John K1VDF, Bob KB1FYL, Bill KB1LJL, Dan W1DMM and maybe a couple I missed. Bill reviewed some of the MARC highlights of 2002.

Motion by John N1GNV and second by W1DMM to accept into membership Chuck N1KGY Motion passed

With the official business completed, Bill recognized to Rich WA1TRY and flung the gavel his way for the presentation of awards. Rich explained the renowned H.A. (horse’s caudal appendage) Award and  entertained us with verbal thumbnails of the many candidates for the HA Award throughout the evening.

Certificates and plaques of appreciation were presented for meritorious service during the year.

Bill W1KKF made the nights highlight awards to the Ham of the Year and Elmer of the Year. These awards are voted by the membership and represent the top accolades to MARC members. The evening closed with a 50/50 raffle and several door prizes  donated by some of the attendees.

Minutes of Meriden Amateur Radio Club
November 2002

The business meeting was flailed open at 1940 on November 14, 2002 with approximately 39 people in attendance. A quorum was present.

General -
1. Introductions.
2. Next meeting is on Thursday December 12th, the annual holiday party.
3. Next VE session is December 10th at 7:00 PM.

Secretary's Report - Accepted as read and presented.

Treasurer’s Report -
1. Accepted as presented. Bob KB1FYL and Tom KB1DSF along with the current Treasurer (N1GNV) will audit the fiscal records in accordance with the by-laws.
2. Based on current funds and projected 2003 budget that $300 be transferred to the scholarship fund and that the annual dues be raised to $25/year
3. Motion by W1DMM with a second by N1RMA to increase dues to $25. After intense discussion, Motion defeated
4. Motion by N1API second by W1FD for MARC to contribute $300 to the Scholarship Fund. Motion passed.

Station Activities - (N1API)
1. Antenna patch panelis complete, need to dress the cables.
2.  The beam rotor is sluggish, needs some TLC and preventive maintenance.
3.  Paining party for the first floor of the CD building. See Rich WA1TRY. November 23rd at 9 AM.

Nets -
SSB 28.375 Tuesdays at 8:00 PM, averaging about 12 +/- check-ins.
VHF 147.36R Tuesdays at 7:30 PM, averaging about 8-9 check-ins. Please use standard repeater protocols.
CW 28.275 Mondays at 8 PM, 3 check-ins. We need a regular net control on the CW net.

Castle Craig - (N1API)
1. Al N1API announced the December Castle Craig special. He will post the rules on the e-mail reflector.
2. N1XXU and N1YGL were presented with their Castle Craig certificates.
3. Next 10/10 Phone QSO party is in February.

Membership - (N1RMA)
Motion by N1RMA, second by several  to accept new members :Greg Wasko KA1WCP of Cheshire, Jonathan  Winslow KB1HCC of Meriden, Art Fregeau K1WMQ of North Haven, Jamie Rivers KB1IZM of North Haven, Dan Couture KB1IXN  of Meriden and Craig Roser KB1INX of Hamden. Passed unanimously. After new member vote, 96 members (94 paid, 2 life).

Interference and Technical - (W1FD)
1. See Frank W1FD or Bob WA1ZLFfor RFI help. They are experts at it.

Instruction - (N1JEO).
1. New Tech class has started. Tuesdays October 15th til December 3rd.
2. Next VE session on scheduled for Nutfest and Tues December 10th.
3. Many MARC members have availed themselves of the free (to CT hams) EmComm EC-1 course offered by the ARRL. If you are a successful graduate of any of the ARRL on-line  courses, please contact me (W1DMM) so I may add your name to the scroll. Congratulations to:

Nutmeg Hamfest - (W1KKF)
1. The preliminary results indicate a positive return.
2. The Alliance fiscal year ends in Feb 2003. The Board will determine any distributions at that time.
3. Final accounting of MARC consignment table remains open.

Candy Store - (K1VDF) Store is open. Cups, hats and patches are available. Jackets are in and distributed.

Key Klix - (WA1TRY)
1. Rich is updating his PC with software to go to press.
2. Need for contributing authors and articles.

Club/Contesting  Activities
1. Sweep Stakes - CW missed a sweep by two NNY and NL. Great turnout and attempt, now the phone guys have to match the effort. See Mark K1MKF for phone time slots
2. Cub Scout demo on December 20th. W1FD. N1XXU, and WA1ZLF will be at MARC. W1DMM will man home station to “guarantee”  at least one QSO.
3. Discussions under way for a public service booth at the Celebrate Wallingford  event in October 2003 ( we have been providing road race coverage for several years)
4. Repair of the FD food tent still in progress
5. Painting party for the first floor scheduled for Sat November 23rd at 9 AM.

EmComm -
Civil Preparedness/ARES/EmComm activities have increased of late. A monthly meeting will be established- probably the first Thurs of the month – The next is December 5th. Guest speaker will be Don Izzo N1HAX

Annual Meeting -
The November business meeting is the Annual Meeting per our bylaws. K1VDF took the floor as teller. The current officer  slate has agreed to run again. Additional nominations were opened, N1RMA nominated for VP - declined, nominations closed. Motion that the Secretary cast one unanimous vote for the nominees, Passed. Slate elected unanimously.
The reelected 2003 officers are:

Elmer/Ham of the Year -

1. Good response to certificate upgrades and new members.
2. Push for QSO party participation - Feb and Aug for SSB; May and Nov for CW . If you are active - submit your logs and mark for Castle Craig Chapter, if not active - Try It You’ll Like It. Castle Craig is our chapter and we should be able to move up the list  a few notches

Membership - (N1RMA)
Motion by N1YGL, second by several N1GNV to accept new member :Luke KA1SE of Wallingford  Passed unanimously. After new member vote, 90 members (88 paid 2002, 2 life).

Interference and Technical - (W1FD)
1. Frank W1FD, Bob WA1ZLF, and Don W1NFG are putting together a report for Elim Park management.
2. Al N1API continues to work with CL&P to correct problems in his area.

1. Joyce N1RMA has decided to retire as Editor-in-Chief. MARC kudos are extended to you for keeping this line of communications at the highest level.
2. Rich WA1TRY has stepped up to take over as the new (returning)  Editor.

Club/Contesting  Activities
1. JOTA is October 19th. The local BSA council is nnot holding any jamboree activities that weekend. MARC is available if a local troop shows an interest.
2. November Sweepstakes (CW 11/2-4, SSB 11/16-18) is both a club and individual event. Contact Bill W1KKF for CW or ??? for SSB coordination of times for club ops. We need a coordinator for SSB.
3. Sweepstakes is also an associated club event. Mark your logs as “Meriden ARC” in the associated club space and let Dan W1DMM know to be able submit ‘valid’ MARC members
4. Bob KB1CIW asked for suggestions for upcoming activities. Some are: Contesting and CW operaaation.
5. The Wallingford Road Race had about 140+ and 12+ MARC communicators. Thanks for your help.
6. The annual Holiday Party will be December 12th. (target date). Food Chief Chef Bob KB1FYL - mess cooks W1DMM, N1GNV, other????s. Award coordinator Rich WA1TRY. Motion by N1API second by KB1DGF for $100 for awards. Passed.

Annual Meeting -
The November 14th. business meeting is the Annual Meeting per our bylaws. The current officer  slate has agreed to run again. Additional nominations wil be accepted in November.

Elmer/Ham of the Year -
The Annual Meeting is also he time to cast your ballot for Elmer and Ham of the Year Awards. Think about your choices for these prestigious Awards.

2. Next meeting is on Thursday September 26th. It will be on Emergency Preparedness.
3. For those who asked: The August speaker Mike K3RFI, has  a web address of www.rfiservices.info.
4. Thanks to Joyce N1RMA for all those years of providing meeting refreshments. Bob KB1FYL will now be hosting the coffee urn.
5. The Monday night CW net (28.275 at 8 PM) is intended for those building their fist skills or listening in to pass their 5 WPM test and upgrade. All are welcome, but please QRS to the slowest speed.

Motion by N1GNV, second by several to accept new member :Brian AB1AI (Brian became a member in July, but because of the post Field Day chaos we have reaffirmed his acceptance) Passed unanimously. After new member vote, 88 members (86 paid 2002, 2 life).

Interference and Technical - (W1FD)
1. Frank W1FD, Bob WA1ZLF, and Don W1NFG are really identifying RFI disturbances at Elim Park - mostly fluorescence lights.

August 2002

The business meeting was opened at 1941 on August 8, 2002 with approximately 20 people in attendance.

Minutes - The minutes were in Key Klix. It was mentioned that the VHF [Field Day] scores were not published in the minutes The minutes stood  as corrected.

Treasurer’s Report - Accepted as presented.

Correspondence - Eastern VHF/UHF conference will be held at the Radison in Enfield on October 24 thru 27th. - SBC SNT contributions of $6.80 to the MARC Scholarship fund - Thank You Card from Rich WA1TRY - World Radio Magazine and Rat Shack flyer.

Nets - 8-10 check ins avg on 10 meters, 10-5 check ins on 2 meters.

Station Activities - The shack is getting put back together. Al and Rich are running new coax. The rotor on the tribander needs servicing.

Castle Craig - There was a 10 10 contest this past weekend and 10 meters was open. - 10 10 has increased its dues to $15.00. Al made a motion that we renew now at the old rate. Second by John K1VDF the motion carried. Al will do a Castle Craig special for 25 Parks in Meriden.

Membership - An application was received from Al Cooper of Cheshire. Joel moved  to accept, second by Al N1APImotion carried. We now have 86 members.

Interference and Technical - W1FD and WA1ZLF will sniffing out noise at Elim Park tomorrow [Aug. 9]. They can help others who have problems.

Instruction and VE - On Tuesdays at 7:00 pm Joel will be at the shack from the 10th of September to the 8th of October to answer questions. There wil be a VE session at the Hamfest. A new technician class starts Tuesdays from October 15th until early December.

Hamfest - Steve Ford will speak about PSK 31 - Dan Miller will speak about emergency courses. - The division director and section manager will be present.

Candy Store - The store is open. The new jackets will be in in a couple of weeks.

Key Klix - Joyce not present.

Old Business - Bike race was a big success, could have used a couple more hams. We had a few [biker] injuries. We need a different policy for ID for the stations. Al said the cluster is having technical difficulties. KB1CIW said new hams want to ask the old hams questions. Maybe some provision could be made for that.

New Business - Joel said the Field Day pins are in. They are $5.00 each - Sow Code net will be Mondays at 8:00 pm on 28.275 MHz - K1VDF said we need a clean up day for the rooms some cool Saturday in September - WA1TRY said we should help paint downstairs and that maybe we should meet there in the summer - Chris said maybe we should have an ARES net. Chris and Rich will try to pull together an ARES net.

1. The MARC-ARRL Affiliation Special Event was a success. Members operated from the club station and their home station amassing several dozen QSOs in a laid back QSO party fashion.
2. Field Day is here again. MARC will again operate as a 2A station from the Godek Farm. HF/CW-W1KKF, HF/SSB-KB1CIW/N1XXU, VHF-KB1FYL, Pwr-WA1TRY, Food-N1GNV/W1DMM, Satellite-KB1FYL, GOTA-K1TDO/KB1HEW, Potty-KB1FYL, Info-N1JEO, Press/PR-WV2LKM, Pins-N1JEO,

Nutmeg Hamfest - (W1KKF)
1. Nutfest date is Sunday, October 13, 2002
2. Club Table will be a “Bring & Buy” (consignment) table for MARC members and non-members. Rules are being developed

Candy Store - (K1VDF) Store is open. Cups, hats and patches are available. Samples of a club jacket and sweatshirt were available. These would have an embroidered club path plus owner’s name and call. See John K1VDF if you are interested in ordering a club jacket. Price: $35 for the jacket – PREPAY. Sizes up to XXXL

Key Klix - (N1RMA) Need for contributing editors and articles.

Club/Contesting  Activities
1. Open house on April 23rd went very well. Next possibility on May 25th for 55th anniversary of MARC – ARRL affiliation.
2. N.E ARRL Director Tom Frenaye K1KI announced a new QSO party – NE QSO PARTY will be held on May 4th from 16:00 to 23:00 and May 5th from 07:00 to 20:00. Details in May QST and at http://www.neqp.org/. Object is to get as many of the 67 NE counties on the air.
3. CPTV Science Fair at Conn Expo Center in East Hartford on May 1st through May 4th. See Joel N1JEO for volunteers.
4. Andy is chairing the Discovery Day radio booth on Wed. April 24th at Hubbard Park. (part of the Daffodil Festival). Help needed for all or part of 8 AM to 3 PM. See N1XXU.
5. Field Day is again upon us – that was a fast year. Need set up, operators, break down, and general support. Honcho’s todate: CW station – W1KKF, SSB station – KB1CIW, VHF station – KB1FYL, Power – WA1TRY, Satellite – KB1FYL, Food – N1GNV, Info & PR – WV2LKM, and Potty – KB1FYL.

Miscellaneous -
1. The June activity meeting will be the THIRD Thursday – June 20th to prepare and load for Field Day.

Minutes of Meriden Amateur Radio Club
March 2002

The business meeting was flailed open at 1938 on March 14, 2002 with approximately 21 people in attendance. A quorum was present.

General -
1. Introductions.
2. Next meeting is on Thursday March 28th. It will be a talk and demo on RD airplanes.
3. May 25th will be the 54th anniversary of MARC affiliation with ARRL.

1. Working on antenna switching project.
2. Motion by K1VDF, second by KE1AY to purchase four (4) Radio Shack headsets (low end costs) plus appropriate ¼ and 1/8 inch adapters for use in shack at various operating positions – not to exceed $100.00. Passed.
3. Members were reminded to contact Al N1API if they have any equipment on loan to or from the club.
4. Club Station will be opened for an Operate and Breakfast morning on Saturday, March 23rd. See K1MKF or KB1CIW.

1. Nutfest treasurer Joel N1JEO presented a $500.00 check to MARC representing a distribution from the 2001 event.
2. Andy N1XXU and Bob KB1FYL have agreed to be the vendor coordinator and outside fleamarket coordinator for the 2002 event, respectively. Welcome aboard.
3. Some new ideas were discussed that could be run by MARC. A) Bring & Buy table – a consignment table open to a larger audience and b) MARC Scholarship raffle for a significant (HF?) rig. Discussion only – no decision.

General -
1. Introductions.
2. Next meeting is on Thursday February 28th. Ir will be an anniversary celebration of 55 years of MARC.
3. Joel N1JEO provided a crib sheet for the MARC reflector commands and procedures.
4. Dan WX1D donated a CD of US white pages. An offering to the scholarship fund takes it.

1. There was  a discussion on opening the shack for Saturday morning (once a moth) operations - and a breakfast meeting. See Bob KB1CIW or Mark N1MKF for details and a possible schedule.
2. Members were reminded that MARC has several pieces of test equipment available for members. Included are an EMI Noise Locator and an Antenna Analyzer. See Al N1API.

Castle Craig - (N1API)

Motion by N1RMA, second by WA1OMZ to accept new members :Jim Hillhouse N1TNX of Meriden, John Pagnano KB1HPY of Wallingford, Ken Stiles WA1UMD of Westbrook, Kevin Jenson N1KCG of Wallingford, and John Bielinski WA1ZRT of Wallingford Passed unanimously. After new member vote, 72 members (70 paid 2002, 2 life).

Interference and Technical - (W1FD)
1. The EMI noise locator is working. A live test was completed at Elim Park.
2. The Elim Park test found several fluorescence fixture bad. These were both near and at some distance from the operating location. Aging components are suspect and may require replacement of the fixture. NB, After a discussion, it was noted that a pair of .05 mfd or smaller capacitor between the line and the ballast transformer case may cure the problem. (These caps present an  impedance of several hundred KOhms at 60 Hz but less than a 1 Ohm at HF frequencies. They will draw an additional 2 ma. or less of line current.)

3. Opportunity: Needed two chairpersons for vendor coordination - inside and outside vendors. See Bill W1KKF.

1. January activity meeting featured Ed Hare W1RFI demonstrating his construction techniques of a 2 meter Yagi while wearing a jacket and tie. A very enjoyable evening.
2. Upcoming ARRL International DX - SSB (Mar 2-3) will be individual participation events - contact Al N1API if you wish to use the club station. This is an Associated Club events - contact the Secretary if you think you may operate in it.

Miscellaneous -
1. A discussion of old and historic records, mementos and minutes of MARC - some 55 years of them. Contact Bob KB1CIW or Dan W1DMM if you have any knowledge of these.

Minutes of Meriden Amateur Radio Club

  January 10, 2002

 The business meeting was called to order at 1939 with approximately 24 people in attendance. A quorum was present. Dan W1DMM Secretary was absent due to illness in family. Don KE1AY took notes for evening.

  General: Introductions were made.
1. Next meeting is January 24th and it will be an activity meeting with Ed Hare,W1RFI .
2. Anyone wishing to get a club rooster by e-mail please contact Bill W1KKF.
3. Mark K!MKF will collect logs of those participating in Meriden ARC VHF contest of January 19-21 and submit same. More info contact Mark, K1MKF.

  Secretary’s Report- Accepted as seen in Key Klix.

  Treasurer’s Report- Accepted as reported. Audit was completed and no problems noted.

  Scholarship funds in CD will be rolled over for 6 months.

  Awards- Bob KB1CIW presented the following awards for participation in the club 2 meter QSO party. 1st place Tom, KB1DSF 2nd place  Bob KB1CIW Top tech award KB1HCW.  Contenders KB1FYL , WA1ZLF Top Polish award went to W1KKF

  Membership- New member was proposed and accepted NK1J Chris Soulias.

  Total members 53 renewals, two life members, total equals 55

  Correspondence- Received some QSL cards. Flyer from Beltronic Repairs.

  Station Activities- N1API -Need new battery for clock. Not much going on.

  Club Nets-
1. SSB 29.375 Tuesday 8:00 PM Light use New Years but expect normal group after holidays.
2. VHF 147.36R Tuesday 7:30 PM  Averaging 6-7 check-ins.

  Castle Craig- 10-10 contest 1st week in Feb. Check with Rich WA1TRY or Al N1API if you wish to use shack to operate in 10-10.

  Interference & Technical W1FD reported nothing new. N1API reported Power Co. working in his area . Heard from DUPC as to the power company fixing problems.

  Instruction And VE
1. N1JEO reported a code class will commence January 15th.
2. VE session will follow 4/2/02.
3. General Class will start 4/9/02
4. VE session 6/18/02

  Nutmeg Hamfest Nothing to report

  Candy Store Open . Jackets may be purchased if enough request. Need six. Price will be researched and mentioned in Key Klix.

  Key Klix N1RMA report all is going well. Articles will be accepted up until the Monday before publishing.

  Old Business
1. E-Mail reflector has changes due to spam. Joel N1JEO requests you E-Mail him at his address with correct e-mail address  so only those registered may send messages.
2. Frank W1FD suggested we reduce price of ads in Key Klix or sell it in quarter page. No one volunteered to sell ads.

  New Business Arrl contest DX contest coming up Interested people contact Mark K1MKF.

  Frank(W1FD) & Dan (WX1D) reported as to their presentation to a cub scout group. Urged Club to do more in getting to other youth groups. Schools were suggested but may be difficult to have them give up instructional time. Church Groups or other scouts are suggested. Joyce N1RMA said FEMA had a grant to a town in valley to teach "Ham radio" to people for use in emergencies. W1KKF will explore.
