Minutes of Meriden Amateur Radio Club
December 2001

The meeting was opened by Pres. Bill W1KKF  at 7:20 PM.

The sympathies of the MARC members are extended to Bob Moseley WA1ZLF on the passing of his wife, Lois, and to Mike KB1FYH and Carol KB1FYI Guay on the loss of their son, Peter.

After a round of introductions, the more than 52 members and their guests enjoyed a culinary  banquet put on by our own chefs Dave K1WJL, John K1VDF and their able staff. An array of fine desserts were provided by many of the attendees.

After the satisfying feast, the business meeting began. The 2002 MARC officers were introduced:

A round of applause for the kitchen crew; Dave K1WJL, John K1VDF, Bob KB1FYL, Mark K1MKF, Lou KS1L, Todd K1TDO, John N1GNV, Joel N1JEO, and Dan W1DMM. Bill reviewed some of the MARC highlights of 2001.

Motion by Joyce N1RMA and second by several to accept into membership Al Cooper K1AMI of Cheshire and Craig Kalley N1ABY of Cheshire

The floor was given over to Rich WA1TRY for the presentation of awards. Rich explained the renowned H.A. (horse’s derriere) Award was returned after several years absence. Rich entertained us with verbal thumbnails of the many candidates for the HA Award throughout the evening.

Certificates and plaques of appreciation were presented for meritorious service during the year.

Bill W1KKF made the nights highlight awards to the Ham of the Year and Elmer of the Year. These awards are voted by the membership and represent the top accolades to MARC members.


The evening closed with a 50/50 raffle and a tea-cup raffle. The tea-cup raffle included an Ornament and Apple Spice Wine  donated by KB1HEW & KB1HEV, CD-ROM Call Book by N1API, and a Surge Protector and ARRL Hand Book by N1JEO.

The business meeting was flogged open at 1938 on November 8, 2001 with approximately 27 people in attendance. A quorum was present.

General -
1. Introductions.
2. Next meeting is on Thursday December 13th. and is the annual holiday party.

Secretary's Report - Accepted. The Holiday Party showed the incorrect date - should read Thurs. December 13th.

Treasurer's Report - Accepted as presented. End of year audit will be done by incoming (N1GNV) and outgoing treasurers(KE1AY), Tom KB1DSF, and Bob KB1FYL

1. Some certificate activity. Al's changes in the award program seem to have had a positive  result.

Motion by N1RMA, second by WV2LKM to accept three new members: Bill KB1GZJ of Meriden, Bill KB1HEW of East Haven, and Jim KB1HEV of Foxon. Passed unanimously. 85 or 86 members (83-84 paid 2001, 2 life).

Interference and Technical - (W1FD)
1. Nothing new to report

Instruction - (N1JEO).
1. The class started on October 9th. With a VE session on December 4th. About 3 attendees
2. Next VE session on Dec 4th.
3. CW classes started. Runs on Wednesdays 7 PM - 9 PM. About 4 attendees.

Nutmeg Hamfest - (W1KKF)
1. Directors will vote on MARC distribution at Nutfest Annual meeting in February 2002.
2. Directors, officers, and chairs started planning activities for October 2002 event.

Candy Store - (K1VDF) Store is open. Cups, hats and patches are available.

Key Klix - (N1RMA) Need for contributing editors and articles.

Club/Contesting  Activities
1. November Sweepstakes (CW on 11/3-5 and SSB on 11/17-19) operated from the club station. Clean sweep made on CW ( Post meeting note: SSB also made a clean sweep)
2. Upcoming ARRL 10 meter (Dec 9-10), ARRL 160 meter (Dec 1-3) and January VHF Sweepstakes will be individual participation events - contact Al N1API if you wish to use the club station. These are Associated Club events - contact the Secretary if you think you may operate in them.
3. Next 10/10 activity is QSO SSB party in February.

Annual Meeting and Annual Elections
WA1TRY chaired the elections and Ham of the Year / Elmer of the Year balloting.
1. Slate  of officers from 2001 agreed to run Again except Treasurer KE1AY. John N1GNV threw hat into ring for Treasurer. Nominations open from the floor
2. Motion by N1RMA second by N1API that nominations for President be closed. Passed. Motion by N1RMA second by WX1D that all nominations be closed.
3. Secretary cast one unanimous vote for the slate as presented.
4. 2002 MARC Officers: Pres - Bill W1KKF; Vice Pres - Joel N1JEO; Secretary - Dan W1DMM; Treasurer - John N1GNV; Station Manager - Al N1API.
5. Ham / Elmer of the Year secret ballots collected. To be announced at Holiday Party.
6. Directors (W1KKF, WA1TRY, and N1JEO) and managers (WA1ZEK, W1DMM, and N1GNV) for the Nutfest Alliance agreed to serve again. Reaffirmed  by agreement.

Club Activities
1. The next business meeting (December 13th) is the Annual Holiday Party at the VFW Hall on Prince Street, Wallingford. Party start time at 7:00 PM Kitchen duties start between 5:30 -6:00 PM.

Miscellaneous -
1. Thanks to Joel N1JEO MARC has its own DNS - MeridenARC.ORG.
2. The results of club insurance reviewed is permanently tabled.

The business meeting was flogged open at 1935 on October 11, 2001 with approximately 22 people in attendance. A quorum was present.

General -
1. Introductions.
2. Next meeting on October 25th will be an activity meeting. Topic: Field trip to the Yale-Bethany Observatory hosted by Bob KB1FYL. Directions will be forthcoming. The group will assemble and lave from the MARC club site.

1. Both operating positions are equipped for CW operation with a straight key and paddles. Either position can be used with an operators personal key/keyer if desired.
2. The station PC is limping with a potentially bad power supply/fan. A backup keyboard is desired - needs older 5  pin DIN connector.
3. A survey/repair team will determine the needs for  the G5RV this Saturday  (10/13). Recent Senior Center renovations disrupted the anchor point for one leg and the twin lead feed is showing its age.

1. Nothing new to report

Instruction - (N1JEO).
1. The class started on October 9th. With a VE session on December 4th. About 3 attendees

3. CW classes started. Runs on Wednesdays 7 PM - 9 PM. About 4 attendees.
4. The Nutfest VE session had about 10 applicants resulting in 8 license upgrades and 6-7 CSCEs.

Nutmeg Hamfest - (W1KKF)
1. Preliminary  results a success - bottom line and otherwise. The paid gate count was slightly down from last year but  prepaid vendor receipts and lower expenses indicate a positive financial event.
2. Final accounting will not be available until some final bills are in. The Nutfest fiscal year ends in February.
3. Feedback from Riley Hollingsworth, ARRL staffers, most attendees was very positive.
4. The MARC table yielded $99.10, including $15.00 from scholarship benefit Tee shirts.

Candy Store - (K1VDF) Store is open. Cups, hats and patches are available.

Key Klix - (N1RMA) Not enough to publish in October.

Club Activities
1. The next business meeting (November 8th) is the Annual meeting for election of officers and voting for the Elmer of the Year and Ham of the Year.
2. Nominations will be taken from the floor. W1KKF-Pres, N1JEO-VPres, W1DMM-Secry, and N1API-Sta Activities have agreed to run again.
3. The Wallingford FD, PD, CD Bucket Brigade gained about $112,000 for those impacted in the September 11th disaster. It was a rewarding experience for all those involved in the collections.
4. November Sweepstakes (CW on 11/3-5 and SSB on 11/17-19) will be operated from the club station. We need a SSB schedule coordinator. Operators (so far) CW-W1KKF, K1VDF, WA1TRY, W1FD, WY1U; SSB-K1LHO, N1API
5. The annual Holiday Party is tentatively scheduled for Dec 12th (pending confirmation of hall). Motion by W1DMM second by K1LHO for N1GNV to use the opportunity to solicit new members with a not to exceed $50.00 mailing to attend and join MARC. Passed   Motion by N1GNV second by KB1DSF for WA1TRY to put together a significant award program not to exceed $100.00. Passed.
6. JOTA is Saturday October 20th. There is no planned local camporee, MARC will be opened from 1200 to 1500 for local Scouts if they tell us ahead of time.

Miscellaneous -
1. Bob Hagen has been advocate of the US Flag on West Peak for many years. He is looking for a winter stand-in with the Meriden Town Council while he is in Florida.
2. The results of club insurance is tabled.

Club Activities
1. Fox Hunt was enjoyed by several club teams and demonstrated a large variety of DF antennas and techniques. Several teams captured the  bunny, one captured Duchess Diner, and one invaded Arizona. (See the August KK article for details).
2. The submitted SS-SSB scores claimed a clean sweep, but  the printed QST results disagreed. It was found, after many communiqués with the League, comparisons with other submitted logs - the ARRL threw out 33 QSOs and penalized another nine for a new total of 269 QSOs vs. 311 submitted. Included in the lost QSOs were three sections claimed. Lesson learned: ACCURATE LOGS ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER.

Miscellaneous -
1. Donation to QSL.NET was released.
2. WA1TRY clarified a position dealing with public communications events - road races, etc. "If a participant requests, an ambulance [vs. on-site EMT] will be dispatched. The request will be forwarded to the event control."
3. WA1TRY also queried the ARRL as to any legal conflicts with MARC’s participation in these events. The answer was NO. MARC participates as a non remunerated health and welfare communicator to the event (road race, bike race, parade, etc) and is not a party to the commercial  aspects of concessions, entrance fees, prizes, etc.
4. ARRL offers liability insurance for 3rd parties (guests and visitors)  at MARC functions for $350 per year.  N1GNV investigating  other options.
5. Field Day photos are available from WAA1TRY, WY1U, and others.

2. Next meeting one will be a week early to accommodate Field Day on June 21st to load the FD truck.

1. N1API constructed an MFJ version of the RF interference finder. Al is now badgering the Power Company to fix their outside plant.
2. W1FD has constructed an RF Finder receiver (136MHz receiver/DF antenna) as described in the March QST to aid in tracking AC line noise. Antenna under construction. Aluminum tubing is getting hard to find.

Instruction - (N1JEO).
1. The winter classes ended with six new Techs - all passed.
2. VE session on Tues. May 22nd .yielded six new Techs from the class and one walk-in new Tech.

Nutmeg Hamfest - (W1KKF)
1. Nothing new. All is on schedule

1. It is all coming together - again - folks.

3. We can add up to 300 bonus points (100 each) for up to three non-traditional demonstration exhibits. Direction Finding is one, others (ie ATV, field Packet Station, etc) are being investigated.

Miscellaneous -
1. Motion by N1GNV second by K1VDF to donate $50 to QSL.NET (they support the club and many other ham web pages for gratis), Passed. NOTE: Donation will be held until there is verification of QSL.NET viability.

The business meeting was swatted open at 1942 on April 12, 2001 with approximately 21 people in attendance. A quorum was present.

General -
1. Introductions.
2. Next meeting on April 26th  is an activity meeting on soldering techniques.
3. VE session May 22nd after the current Tech class.

1. G5RV needs outside work. Will do when weather gets better.
2. Keyer has arrived. Paddles for second rig will be donated.
3. Need desk mike for 2 meters, also a set of phones for same. Reduce noise level during CD activity.

SSB 28.375 Tuesdays at 8:00 PM, averaging about 6-10 check-ins. Net continues to be stable.
VHF 147.36R Tuesdays at 7:30 PM, averaging about 2-4 check-ins. Need more to keep this a viable net

Castle Craig - (N1API)
1. Al has researched the printing of new certificates. Motion by KA1SZP second by N1GNV to proceed in a reprint of certificates up to $75.00 (Al estimates $26.56 plus S&R plus school print charge). Motion passed.

Membership - (N1RMA) Motion by N1RMA second by N1API to accept new member Mohamed Saadi (no call) from New Haven. Passed unanimously. 73 members (71 paid 2001, 2 life).

Interference and Technical - (W1FD)
1. No new reported problems
2. W1FD is constructing an RF Finder (136MHz receiver/DF antenna) as described in the March QST to aid in tracking AC line noise.

Instruction - (N1JEO).
1. The winter classes started on Tues. March 20th 7PM-9PM for eight weeks.

2. Al is still gathering info on the future source of Castle Craig certificates.

Membership - (N1RMA)  70 members (68 paid 2001, 2 life). No new applications. Discussion about putting the application on the MARC web page. Will require a PDF conversion. Will eventually be done

Station Activities - (N1API)
1. Log  program CT is now programmed with the DX cluster. This runs under a DOS (not Windows) prompt. See N1API for instructions.
2. Two new keyers for the other rig were discussed. Logikey (W1KKF) and MFJ 493 (N1API). Both were similar in price ($129.95), memory size and memory quantity, variable send speed, dot/dash variation, QSK adjustment, sequential QSO number. Each had some additional cost for cable package and power warts. Differences were mostly in keyer layout, memory loading, and user comfort in operation. A hand ballot was requested by W1KKF. MFJ-9, Logikey-6. Motion by N1API second by N1YGL to purchase the MFJ keyer. Passed.

3. N1API volunteered the MARC Secretary to develop a "Welcome Aboard" package for new and prospective members. Still in progress.

Most likely; if all the certs. can be scanned into a file (PDF) preferred, they can be e-mailed to recipients - this seems to be the trend in a majority of these chapter award programs. Existing paper stock may be reserved for MARC members who are also Castle Craig members.
 

Membership - (N1RMA)  Motion by N1API, second by K1LHO, to accept new members Mike Camarata KB1FYG of Wallingford and Mark Mokoski WA1ZEK of Higganum. Passed. 57 members (55 paid 2001, 2 life).

Nutmeg Hamfest - (W1KKF)
1. Middlesex ARS has opted to drop from the Nutmeg Hamfest Alliance. MARC, after some Alliance bylaw changes, is the sole member of the Alliance. The distribution of Alliance assets is 1/3 Alliance, 1/3 MARC, and 1/3 MARS.
2. The new (2001) Alliance board stated that a fee increase would be necessary if the 2001 event had any hope in taking place. Motion by N1API second by K1LHO that MARC recommends the Alliance proceeds with the 2001 event based on the BoD recommended rates. Passed unanimous. Continued discussions on the future of the Hamfest.
3. Motion by N1GNV second by K1LHO that the MARC distribution of the Alliance assets remain with the Alliance for use as seed funds (a loan) for the 2001 event. Passed.
4. Chairs are needed for the 2001 event in the area of Vendors, Convention Speakers, and the VE arrangements.

4. GOTAP program chair K1EC had four new hams that needed an "Elmer" call. Mike K1LHO will call. Conrad will write a piece for Key Klix to refresh memories on GOTAP.
