Minutes of Meriden Amateur Radio Club
December 2000

The December meeting was the annual Holiday Party and started with a fine repast enjoyed by approximately  40-45 members and guests. A quorum was present. The President opened the official meeting opened at 20:26 on December  14, 2000, called the meeting to order and dispensed with the normal  agenda and reports.

General -
1)   Introductions of those  present.
2)  The honored guest Ernie Frattini , Wallingford Director of Civil Preparedness guest was recognized.
3)  A round of applause to the kitchen crew John K1VDF, Dave K1WJL, Lou KS1L., Dan KA1SZP, Mark N1MKF and a few I missed.
4)  Bill W1KKF announced recent substantial contributions and the official IRS recognition marks the inauguration of the Scholarship Fund.

November 2000

The business meeting was malleted open at 1943 on November 9, 2000 with approximately 20 people in attendance. A quorum was present.

General -
1. Introductions.
2. Next meeting on December 14th is the Annual Holiday Party. Start time is 7 PM
3. The notice by Bill W1KKF to present a bylaw change at the October business meeting regarding Family Membership was withdrawn. The reason given was that three or more unmarried couples over the past ten years have been accepted as family members with a single copy of Key Klix sent to the common address so the precedent has been set.
4. Ed N1WKT donated another dozen of his famous Araucana chicken eggs - pale green in color. See the May 2000 minutes for a description. John N1GNV donated a copy of the 1998 ARRL Handbook. Both will be part of the 50/50 drawing.
5. Next VE session is November 21st at 7 PM.

Station Activities - (N1API)
1. Fully operational for Sweep Stakes - CW and expect to be up again for the SSB operation on Nov 18-19.
2. See Al’s report in Key Klix for many additional details.
3. The library PC needs a new keyboard. Preferably one that is RF immune.
4. The G5RV needs a new end hook, since the work is going on in the parking lot. A temporary hook will be used during SS.

Nets -
CW 28275 Mondays at 8:00 PM is no longer operating.
SSB 28375 Tuesdays at 8:00 PM, averaging about 8 check-ins..
VHF 147.36R Tuesdays at 7:30 PM, averaging about 4 check-ins.
The VHF net will be expanded to include a once a month EC emergency net for Wallingford after the first of the new year.

Castle Craig - (N1API)
1. Next 10/10 SSB QSO party is February 3-4. The club station will be available. See Al
2. The 10/10 Board of Directors will meet in Worcester Mass in July 2001. Motion by K1VDF for a MARC/Castle Craig Chapter table ($10) and a door prize donation of $25. Second K1MKF Passed Al N1API will man the Chapter table.

Membership - (N1RMA)  Motion by N1RMA, second by several, to accept new member JOHN R. MOORE N1OFB of Wallingford. Passed. 88 members (86 paid 2000, 2 life).

Interference and Technical - (W1FD) No new reported problems

Instruction - (N1JEO).
1. The fall classes are in progress on Tuesdays  7PM-9PM
2. VE session to follow class on November 21st.

Nutmeg Hamfest - (W1KKF) Nothing new to report.

LHARC - (KB1EEN & KB1ETB) No Report.

Candy Store - (K1VDF) Store is open. Cups, hats and patches are available.

Key Klix - (N1RMA) Articles are always welcome

Events -
1. Annual Holiday Party will be at the VFW on Prince Street on Thursday December 14th at 7 PM. Volunteers at 5:30 PM.  Non-member guests are welcome at $5.00 each. Membership dues for 2001 are due at the door or prepay to help Joyce out. Desserts are welcome.
2. Sweepstakes - CW held on November 4-5 Clean Sweep. SSB on Nov 18-19 (Post mtg.-We swept about 9:30 AM on Sun). See Bill W1KKF (CW) or Mark K1MKF (SSB) for pin ($5) and cup ($15) orders.

Special Incorporation Meeting and Annual Meeting
Motion by Joyce N1RMA, Second By Mark K1MKF to begin a Special "First Meeting of Incorporation" to fulfill State of Connecticut requirements. Motion passed

Motion by Joyce N1RMA, second by Al N1API for the membership to reaffirm the Constitution and Bylaws last amended on October 8, 1998 including the W1FD Scholarship Committee Guidelines as the Meriden Amateur Radio Club, Inc. Articles of Incorporation. Motion passed.

The 2001 members of the Scholarship Committee were named in accordance with Bylaw Section 7. Frank W1FD, John N1GNV, Joyce N1RMA, and Don KE1AY.

The 2001 Nutmeg Alliance board of director members were named. Bill W1KKF, Rich WA1TRY, Joel N1JEO, and John N1GNV as alternate.

Nomination and Election of 2001 Officers.
The present 2000 slate of officers agreed to run in 2001.  No nominations were presented from the floor.

Motion by Joyce N1RMA second by Tom KB1DSF to close nominations. Passed.

Motion by Joyce N1RMA second by Tom KB1DSF for the secretary to cast one unanimous vote for the nominated slate. Passed

Secretary Dan KA1SZP cast a unanimous vote for the nominated slate.

October 2000

   Meeting of October 12, 2000

1. Meeting called to Order by President, W1KKF.
2. 21 people in attendance.
3. Next Meeting October 26, 2000 (Activity Meeting)
4. Announcements: Joel, N1JEO, announced a VE session on November 21, 2000 at 7:00 PM
5. Bill, W1KKF, announced he is proposing a change in the By-laws to change the definition of  a "Family membership". Based on previous non-married single dwelling members he wants to change the definition to "a single address for distribution of Key KLIX. Additional discussion is sure to follow.

Treasures report:  Approved as presented

Membership:  Two new members voted in -Bob and Sheila Seaman, W1HUG of  Hamden. Bob was first licensed in 1952.

Correspondence: None

Station Activity: G5RV out of service due to Senior citizens reconstruction removing the telephone pole that provides one support.

Instruction and VE : Joel, N1JEO reported he has a class of  14 students (Who needs the Durham Fair).

Key Klix: Joyce,  N1RMA, has been recuperating from surgery- John, N1GNV, has been filling in.

Old Business:
1.  Bob, N1SA, purchased the Collins S line that Bix, K1EPX donated to the club.
2. Joel , N1JEO, is looking for assistance with the Boy Scout camporee to be held on October 14, 2000 at Hammonasett State Park. Joel said that they will be demonstrating many different technologies at the camporee.
3. Bob, KB1CIW, reported he has had no inquiry’s from local troops on JOTA which will be held on October 21, 2000.
4. Dan, KA1SZP, is still working on Tax exempt status for the club. He has received a request for rewording of some of our application. A GOOD SIGN.
5. $75.00 was voted to purchase new HAM of the Year and Elmer of the Year Plaques.
6. Nutmeg Hamfest: Perfect weather-Great speakers-Full parking lot---Attendance the same. Last year we had 635 this year 632. Probably not make any money again. Discussed increasing gate to $7.00 and tables to $35.00. If we stay at Mt. Side these increases will be the only way we might make any money.

The business meeting was malleted open at 1945 on September 14, 2000 with approximately 16 people in attendance. A quorum was present.

General -
1. Introductions.
2. Next meeting on September 28th is a QSL sorting party.
3. W1NRG received a 1st place CT Section Multi-op certificate from the ARRL for  the 1999 Sweepstakes SSB Contest
4. W1NRG received a 1st place NE Division Multi-op certificate from the ARRL for  the 1999 Sweepstakes CW Contest. (It would have been a plaque, but no one sponsored the plaque)

Secretary's Report - The August 2000 minutes are available and accepted.

Treasurer’s Report - Was accepted as presented
The accounts will be moved to Webster Bank to reduce/eliminate some service charges

Correspondence –
1. Various Flyers.
2. IRS has requested additional info on our 501 c3 filing. (At least they are looking at it) The Secretary will comply.
3. Received letter from ZF5ADU in Durban, So Africa. Asking for help in housing and transport during an  upcoming visit to the New Britain.

Station Activities - (N1API)
1. Arranging for phone distribution so CD activities can be better served

CW 28275 Mondays at 8:00 PM, no report.
With the change in license CW requirements and the continuous low check-in rate, the CW net will be dissolved.
SSB 28375 Tuesdays at 8:00 PM, averaging about 8 check-ins..
VHF 147.36R Tuesdays at 7:30 PM, averaging about 4 check-ins.
The VHF net will be expanded to include the EC emergency net for Wallingford

Castle Craig - (N1API)
1. Next 10/10 SSB QSO party is in February. The CW QSO party is October 28-29. Ten Ten Sprint on Oct 10th
2. The 10/10 Board of Directors will meet in Worcester Mass in July 2001. Excellent opportunity to meet many world wide tenners.

Membership - (N1RMA)  Motion by N1GNV, second N1API to accept new members. Bob Paddock W4RGP of Meriden, Terry O’Brien No Call of New Haven, and Dave Stanford (reinstate) KE1AV of Meriden. Passed. 85 members (83 paid 2000, 2 life).

Interference and Technical - (W1FD) Elim Park seems to have a resurgence of AC line noise. W1FD and W1NFG are on the chase.

Instruction - (N1JEO).
1. Fall class flyers are available.
2. The fall class will change to a 6 week format versus the current 10 week. Starting October 10th  7PM-9PM
3. VE session to follow class on November 21st.

Nutmeg Hamfest - (W1KKF) All is moving along according to schedule. John K1VDF is taking the list for volunteers. There will be a club table, but some logistics remain open.

LHARC - (KB1EEN & KB1ETB) No Report.

Candy Store - (K1VDF) Store is open. Cups, hats and patches are available.

Key Klix - (N1RMA) Articles are always welcome

Events -
1. Wallingford Park & Rec has requested our communications expertise at their Wallingford Road (foot) Race October 7th. See Rich WA1TRY to sign-up
2. Durham Fair Information booth will not be available this year. The Fair Association has changed the format and will not have any Discovery Tent displays this year.
3. The Boy Scout demo at Hammonaset State Park on Sat Oct 14th at 8 AM is set. Two stations - one at the Boy Scout site and one at the Cub Scout site - will be linked with HF, ATV and Pkt. Set up Friday about 8 PM see Joel N1JEO to volunteer - he needs about four.

Library Books -
The ARRL has new editions (updated to reflect new FCC rulings and the new license manuals) of publications are in.
N1API suggested that the paper QSTs in the library be replaced with ARRL QST CD copies.

August Activity Meeting - (W1KKF) Special meeting featuring Riley Hollingsworth K4ZDH, FCC Special Council for Amateur Radio Enforcement was a great success. W1KKF reviewed the expected costs - some billing has not been received - and should be below the budgeted $125.

Miscellaneous-
1. IRS Non-Profit Status (KA1SZP) - Received request for additional information. This will be sent.
2. New Annual Award Plaques (K1VDF) will cost about $146. After discussion, John will check on getting new longer backboards and moving the current marker plates.
3. Motion by N1API, second by W1FD to accept the offer for the Collins S-Line from N1SA (if he is still interested). Passed

General -
1. Introductions.
2. Next meeting on August 24th is a special activity meeting featuring FCC Council Riley Hollingsworth.
3. Ed Linn N1WKT again donated a dozen Araucana chicken eggs - pale green in color. See the May 2000 minutes for a description.
4. The Eastern VHF/UHF Conference is in Enfield August 26th and 27th.
5. Sperry W1KKG is looking for a tower climber to remove his beam and tower in preparation for a move to Florida. Compensation should be discussed with Sperry.
6. Norm WA1CCQ has a TH-33 HF beam and a 10 element VHF beam available. Best Offer

As a Special Service Club, we may purchase a library set for $170. The individual price is $300.95. (A full list of the set may be found on the ARRL web site). Motion by N1YGL second by KA1IXG to purchase a library set for the MARC library for $170.00 plus tax. Motion passed.

August Activity Meeting - (W1KKF) This is a special meeting featuring Riley Hollingsworth K4ZDH, FCC Special Council for Amateur Radio Enforcement. The meeting is limited to MARC and MARS current members and will be held at the Wallingford Mountainside location (due to expected attendance) at 7 PM on August 24th. Arrears members may pay their dues at the door or contact Joyce N1RMA in advance. Non-members may join MARC at the door. Dues for new members will be $15 for the balance of 2000 and all of 2001 (a 25 % discount on normal two year membership). The cost for this meeting is being shared by MARC and MARS. Motion by N1GNV second by WX1D to cover cost for Riley Hollingsworth seminar up to $125.00. Passed.

Miscellaneous-
1. IRS Non-Profit Status (KA1SZP) - Finally underway. An erroneous mail address delayed the process.
2. Joel N1JEO has made arrangements for member badges at the Sign Man for $8.00 Each badge includes Name or Call plus the MARC logo. Badges have already been ordered for regular volunteers in Wallingford CD events. Several members ordered one before the August activity meeting. Additional orders see Joel.

JULY 2000

The business meeting was gaveled open at 1940 on July 13, 2000 with approximately 24 people in attendance. A quorum was present.

General -
1. Introductions.
2. Next meeting on July 22nd is an activity meeting featuring a Fox Hunt specialist.
3. The widow of Walt KA1SYO wishes to sell his station equipment. Consists of a Kenwood TS450AT (All mode HF with auto antenna tuner - filters unknown, MFJ 9?? 300 Watt tuner, and Icon IC2AT 2 meter HT. Contact Bill W1KKF with reasonable offers.

Station Activities - (N1API) Al’s full report is in the June issue of Key Klix.
1. He will hold a library clean-up on Sat Jul 15th - volunteers welcome. All members that lay claim to any equipment, contact Al so it doesn’t end up in the land fill.
2. The library PC is up and running.
3. Motion by N1API, second by WA1TRY to purchase a monitor for the PC in the shack - not to exceed $120. Passed. The current monitor is at the end of its useful life

1. Al is looking into a new certificate supply. There are about 192 left and will last about 2 years.
2. The Summer QSO SSB party is the weekend of August 5th and 6th.

Membership - (N1RMA) Some additional renewals have been received. 81members (79 paid 2000, 2 life).

Interference and Technical - (W1FD) Elim Park is reporting some new AC line noise.

Instruction - (N1JEO).
1. The fall class will change to a 5 week format versus the current 10 week. Starting October 10th

Nutmeg Hamfest - (W1KKF) Flyers are being distributed. Several of the door prizes have been donated by the Major vendors.

Events - Wallingford Park & Rec has requested our communications expertise at their upcoming events. See Rich WA1TRY to sign-up. We may use the new mobile repeater as a practice for the CD SET. The mobile repeater is the back up Wallingford Repeater alternate unit on a trailer.

JUNE 2000


The business meeting was gaveled open at 1940 on June 8, 2000 with approximately 19 people in attendance. A quorum was present.

General -
1. Introductions.
2. Next meeting on June 22nd is an activity meeting. Annual "get ready for Field Day" meeting
3. Walt KA1SYO was reported in Hospice. [Post meeting note: Walt KA1SYO passed away on June 10th]

Secretary's Report - The May 2000 minutes are available and accepted as corrected. [The next VE session is on June 6th and  Joel N1JEO volunteered for ATV and Packet communications.]

Station Activities - (N1API) Things are generally quiet. The new Kenwood desk mike (MC-60) is in.

Castle Craig - (N1API) The band and Certificate activity has been quite.

Membership - (N1RMA)  Motion by N1RMA second by K1VDF to accept new member Bob Dixon W1KU of Wallingford. Passed unanimously. 78 members (76 paid 2000, 2 life).

Interference and Technical - (W1FD) W1NFG has again received some interference complaints from neighbors - TV audio this time. There is considerable question that these complaints are real or realistic.

Instruction - (N1JEO).
1. Technician class with optional CW was disappointing - class attendance went to zero
2. The fall class may be changed to a 5 week format versus the current 10 week. Probably starting October 10th

Nutmeg Hamfest - (W1KKF) Flyers are being distributed. Alinco has also signed up

LHARC - (KB1EEN & KB1ETB) Still perking.

Events -  A recent presentation at Elin Park was very well received. The audience was wall to wall (upwards of 150). Propagation was not the best because of Solar Disturbances. Frank W1FD used his rig into a G5RV for the demo station. Presenters were: Frank W1FD, Dan WX1D, Bob WA1ZLF, Don W1NFG, and Joel N1JEO.

Library Books - Tabled until the ARRL publishes the new License Manuals. Probably in a month or so.

Field Day - Field Day is June 24-25th. Set up on Friday starting at 2:00 PM HF/SSB chaired by Randy WA1OMZ, HF/CW Bill W1KKF, Novice  Station Todd K1TDO, Satellite station - Dave N1RBL, food Julia Childs or John N1GNV., Power Rich WA1TRY, Press info and FD Pins Steve WV2LKM, Potty Mark K1MKF, and Info Booth Bob KB1CIW

MAY 2000

The business meeting was gaveled open at 1942 on May 11, 2000 with approximately 21 people in attendance. A quorum was present.

General -
1. Introductions.
2. There will be a VE session on June 5th
3. Next meeting on May 25th is an activity meeting. Tune up night and ULS on line sign up.
4. Ed Linn N1WKT donated a dozen Araucana chicken eggs - pale green in color. Ed explained that the Araucana chicken [aka: the Easter Egg Chicken] is named for the Araucanian Indians of southern Chile and are noted for their pale blue, green, pinkish colored eggs. [Who said that business meetings are boring? Sec.]
5. Walt KA1SYO is expected home in a few days from the hospital
6. Tuna Tin 2 Crystals or on order. There is one TT2 kit available for $15.

Secretary's Report - The April 2000 minutes are available and accepted. [Post April meeting note: The BSA request for the October camporee was for "non-traditional Ham areas of interest"  Joel N1JEO volunteered for Satellite communications.]

Instruction - (N1JEO).
1. Technician class with optional CW has started and will end with a VE Session after the last class. The classes will end June 6th.
2. The  VE session on April 17th was attended by 21, most (18/21) upgraded with CSCEs form the "old" FCC rules

Nutmeg Hamfest - (W1KKF) Flyers are being distributed. The Alliance are firming up plans for headline speaker at the seminars. Wayne Greene of "73 Magazine" fame will be the featured speaker.

Miscellaneous -
MARC members donated $100 ($70 collected from members and $30 matching from MARC) to the Willem van Tuijl Fund, the 13-year-old from the Netherlands and son of Jacco KH2TD and Jannie KH2TE van Tuijl wounded by gunfire during an attack by pirates off the coast of Honduras last March.

Field Day - Planning time again. Field Day is June 24-25th. We still need a Satellite coordinator. 1. The Connecticut Rivers BSA Council has asked that we help in council wide (camporee) event at Hammanassett on October 13-15th. Will be operating as K2BSA/1. They needed an answer in April, a tentative Yes was given.
2. Durham Fair is in September. KA1SZP will apply for space in the Discovery Tent.

Wallingford Repeater - (W1KKF) Bill reported on the repeater upgrade activity.

Miscellaneous -
1. Mark K1MKF asked about the club being a QSL manager. Mark will do the work, using the MARC PO box as the US mail address.
2. Mark K1MKF talked about the recent QST article of hams financially helping a youngster with serious medical problems. Motion by K1MFK second by ???? to pass the hat and match the donation from MARC. Amended motion by KA1SZP second by KE1AY to limit the match to $30. Motion as amended passed.

Field Day - Planning time again. Field Day is June 24-25th. After a discussion, motion by K1MKF second by WA1OMZ to operate as last year as a 2A station. Passed. HF/SSB chaired by Randy WA1OMZ, Novice chaired by Todd K1TDO, Satellite station - open, food Julia Childs or her appointee.

3. POST MEETING NOTE Tune up night has been rescheduled for April. This month's activity will be Joel talking about the Ellecraft HF rig he just built
4. Walt KA1SYO is on the mend after surgery.

Interference and Technical - (W1FD) Nothing new to report. N1API is still chasing his RFI/EFI problems (he is doing so well he chased the Power Co. Engineer into retirement)

LHARC - (KB1EEN & KB1ETB) The new club now has about 12 members. Is in the process of setting up a Packet Station. Hopes to operate during the ARRL School Club Roundup in February

Tuna Tin 2 - The crystals in the kit are off the standard QRP frequency at 7.0435 MHz.  On frequency crystals are available.  Motion by N1GNV second by KE1AY to purchase one 7.040 MHz Xtal for each kit - the original cost estimate of $20.00 will cover most of the cost.  MARC will cover the additional cost. Motion passed
